in ■hi VETERINARY SCIENCE PROGRAM Enrollment is being taken for the 2007 St. Joseph County 4-H Veterinary Science program. Youth in third through fifth grades only will meet Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 and 12. Youth in sixth through 12th grades only will meet Feb. 19 and March 5,12,19 and 26. All meetings will be held at the Western Veterinary Clinic, 25190 State Road 2, South Bend. The meetings will begin at 7 p.m., ending at approximately 9 p.m. The program is organized jointly by the St. Joseph County Cooperative Extension Service and the Michiana Veterinarian Association, represented by Dr. Martin Langhofer, DVM. The Veterinary Science project is designed to help young people better understand animals and their health and disease problems. The project will teach the basics of pet and animal care. There will be several outside speakers, films, special activities and a field trip to the Purdue School of Veterinary Science. More information on the project will be available at the first meeting for each session. ATV CLUB The newest Elkhart County 4-H club is the ATV Club. Any Elkhart County youth in third through 12th grades interested in all-terrain vehicles is eligible to join. All members will be required to pass a safety training course before they are eligible to ride with the club. Helmets and other safety gear will also be required for all members. The new 4-H ATV club will host its first two meetings at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16 and 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the lower level of the ECCC building on the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen. CHICAGO VISIT Ten 4-H members were selected to participate.in the Chicago trip on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 28 and 29. The 4H members started their visit to Chicago by viewing the King Tut exhibit at the Field Museum. The group had lunch at Lawry s The Prime Rib and then did some sightseeing along Michigan Avenue. In the evening, they had Chicago style pizza at Giordano's and attended a performance of the musical "Mamma Mia" at the Cadillac Palace Theater. The group stayed overnight at the Embassy Suites hotel on Columbus Drive. On Friday morning, the 4-H members toured the Lincoln Park Zoo, then had lunch at Ed Debevic's before returning to Elkhart County. 4-H members in grades 10 to 12 were invited to apply for the trip. Participants were selected based on their tenure, service and accomplishments in the 4-H program. Participants for the 2006 Chicago trip were: Laura Ellen Burtsfield, Goshen; Aaron Denlinger, Elkhart; Ashley Gautsche, New Paris; Tricia Gautsche, New Paris; Adriana Klinedinst, Elkhart; Adam Martin, Elkhart; Owen Prough, Goshen; Mara Scott, Elkhart; Chuck Snyder, Goshen; and Ashley Wemtz, Goshen. Chaperoning the trip were Laurie Sula and Pam Brock, 4-H Youth Educators with the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service in Elkhart County. The Elkhart County 4-H club sponsored the trip.

Nappanee library offers winter break getaway
By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE The Nappanee Public Library was overrun with penguins as 39 local kids gathered last Thursday to learn about these featherless, flightless birds. Of course, the penguins were not real. This was part of the library's annual Winter Break Getaway celebration. Each year, while local kids are on winter break from school, the library holds a special "Getaway" day, where kids can come and learn about a different topic. This year's topic was, of course, penguins. Cheryl Myers, who works at the library, chose the topic

pets, the kids participated in a variety of games, including a balloon egg game, and a chinstrap game. One game, titled "Zookeeper Dilemma," gave the kids the chance to use their newly-acquired penguin species expertise. Pretending to be zookeepers, they had to "round up" all of the zoo's penguins, which had all escaped, and put them back in their cages based on their species. The children identified the species by what they ate, what they looked like and other characteristics. Following game time, the kids performed a Happy Feet dance based on the new movie by the same name.
