NWHS football players honored

By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE Last month, the Indiana Football Coaches Association named two North Wood students, sophomore Skyler Titus and senior Jed Beer, to the 2006 Class 3A All-State football team. Beer, a linebacker, won AP (Associated Press) All-State Honorable Mention and AllConference. Titus, who was quarterback, won both All-

By Mesu Andrews Correspondent NAPPANEE Look around an emergency room and you'll find disaster doesn't discriminate according to social standing. After a few episodes of CBS's Survivor, you'll agree that whether it's a truck driver or a Manhattan businessman, worms are quality cuisine when you're starving. Death, hunger each of these levels the ground beneath the feet of every human being. There's yet another grand equalizer this one far more pleasant. Music. Plain, simple music. Think about it. Just sing one rousing chorus of Jingle Bells don't we all become children again, waiting for Santa on Christmas morning?

State and All-Conference. Both were thrilled to be honored in such a way. "It's a great feeling," said Titus. "It makes you feel like you've accomplished something." Beer said, "I was excited and happy that the coach would nominate me for something like that." According to Beer and Titus, it was the coaches at North Wood who decided which students to nominate.

The year 2007 has dawned. As Wa-Nee welcomes a new year, it will not be easy to forget the many exciting twists and turns that took place in 2006. Some examples include (clockwise from top left): Wakarusa Dime Store Co-Owner Deb McNally weighs out some of the new blueberry Jumbo Jelly Beans. Seniors Neil Trinkley and Kelli Myers were the Sweetheart king and queen for 2006. They were crowned on Jan. 27 a a basketball game against Warsaw. The 2006 Apple Blossom queen this year was Whitney Kirkdorffer. Well, on Thursday, Dec. ’2l, Caleb Shaw used his musical talent to bring our community together. As the audience sat spellbound, it didn't matter how they were dressed, if they were young or old, rich or poor. With well over 300 in attendance, the concert raised over $2,500 for the Family Christian Development Center to benefit families in our community struggling with hunger, illness and housing needs. Everyone gave what they could, and Caleb gave his voice. Caleb is the son of Jim and Benita Shaw and a 2003 graduate of North Wood High School. Some of Caleb's accomplishments while in high school included Dawning Generation, the

"All coaches get together and nominate people from their team, then all of the coaches vote," Beer explained. It is much the same for AllState. "All-State is selected by a group of coaches for football achievement," said Titus. For Beer, earning his title has been one way of following in his brothers' footsteps. After high school, Shaw attended Anderson University, where he met Andy Mathews, his friend and piano accompanist for the FCDC concert. Shaw said of his friend, "Andy's a great guy, and we've kept in touch over the years. I called him when we were planning the concert and said, 'Hey, how would you like to come up here and play for a good cause?' He didn't even hesi-

Middlebury Electric wins bid for CSO project By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE job, but somebody has to do it. Monitoring the sewers, that is. With a bid of $265,079, it looks like that "somebody" is going to be Middlebury Electric, Inc. of Goshen. City clerk-treasurer Kim Ingle made the announcement at the weekly Board of Works meeting on Friday, Dec. 22. Of the three companies that placed bids on the CSO (combined sewer overflow) project, Middlebury Electric had the smallest. That means that they expect to be able to complete the project in that amount of money. The smaller a company's bid, the less the cost to hire them. The CSO monitoring project involves installing monitoring devices in the sewers that will keep track of how much sewage is discharged, which, in turn, will make it much easier for the wastewater department to keep an eye on sewage overflow and keep the city's groundwater cleaner and safer. The other two companies that bid on the project were Maddox Industrial Contractors out of See CSO, page 2
