The Bloom family were all on the car and just out of Leesburg when Charles attempted to change seats and as he swung from the running board he lost his hold and fell from the car at the curve in the road. 75 Years Ago July 2,1931 On Friday, July 3 at 8:00 p.m. the famous America League Drum ‘ Corps of Elkhart will perform in our city streets. Three veteran drivers are Lee Price with a Loudermilk Orchard Special, Jim Rassie driving for Mutschler Bros, and John Hostetler piloting for Nappanee Milling Co. ! Four boys driving their first Derby are: Dana Stickel for McCormick Motors, Steve Dawson the 2nd Mutschler Special, Randy Weddle piloting for Nuhauser Hatchery, and Roger Grimm - driving for Newcomer Jewelry. Winner of the Elkhart Derby will represent the county in Akron, Ohio in August competing for $15,000 in scholarships.
