North Wood handles Labile in SO win
By Anthony Godson Editor With none of her players dropping a game, North Wood girls tennis coach Tis Schwartz was pleased with her team's 5-0 win over LaVille last Friday. "Everyone seemed like they were playing 'our' game," Schwartz said. "We tried to take control of the match, instead of letting the other team dictate what we were going to do. Everyone mentally played well." Each of North Wood's singles players and both of the doubles teams defeated their LaVille counterparts in straight games, with No. 1 Singles sophomore Amy Zeltwanger, getting her first win of the season. After winning the first game 6-2, Zeltwanger fell behind LaVille senior Stephanie Berch, by the score of 4-1 in the second game. At that point, the North Wood junior reeled off the next five points for the match

win. "Amy was down 1-4, but she fought back, and had that never say die attitude," Schwartz said. "She came out and won five games in a row, and that's huge for her." In the time when Berch did outscore Zeltwanger, Schwartz didn't notice her player's game declining, but did notice Berch's improving. "(Berch) picked up her game, and just started playing a little better," the coach said. "Amy didn't play bad, she just had to take a breath, and get herself back into it. And that's what she did." At N0..2 Singles, North Wood junior Jaclyn Swain defeated LaVille sophomore Leah Bennett, 6-1, 6-0, while junior Julia Yoder had no problem with her opponent at No. 3 Singles, winning 6-0,6-0. North Wood's No. 1 Doubles team of juniors Anna Kitson and Erin Hoffer won their match 6-1, 6-2, while the No. 2
Goshen outlasts North Wood
By Anthony Godson Editor After jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead, the North Wood Panthers couldn't sustain the momentum on Monday night losing to the Goshen Redskins 7-4 at home. "We need to hit the ball better than we did tonight," North Wood Coach Nick Davis said. "You're not going to win very many games in our conference when you only score four runs." North Wood scored its four runs on six hits, while Goshen had an offensive outburst scoring seven runs on 14 hits. "They hit the ball well," Davis said. "Part of that was Adam (Mast) didn't have his best stuff tonight. He was missing spots, and Goshen is a good team. They're going to capitalize on your mistakes. He'll learn from that." In the start, the junior lefty Mast went 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out three. The bulk of Goshen's damage came in the top of the second inning, after a 2-run homerun by North Wood senior Brock Armington gave his team a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Down 2-0, Goshen began the top of the second with two consecutive doubles, followed by an RBlsingle by senior Brian Hunter. Goshen recorded two more hits in the inning, but scored only two runs on five hits and a North Wood error. Following the Armington homerun in the first, Goshen's
Doubles team of freshmen Kerry Hoffer and Alii Heeter won 6-1, 6-0. "Our doubles were moving, and playing aggressively together," Schwartz said. North Wood's regular No. 2 Doubles team is comprised of Heeter and junior Casey Bough, but because Bough wasn't going to be able to join in the team in the next day's DeKalb Invitational, Kerry Hoffer filled in. "Casey is not going to be available for the tournament, and we knew we needed to get a doubles team together that had a little experience playing in a match," Schwartz said. "It is a tournament, and you can't just throw two people together, and expect them to do well." The performance of the No. 2 Doubles team was just the icing on the cake for Schwartz, who saw her whole team perform as well as it has all season. "LaVille's a decent team," she said. "They're young and • they're growing just like we are."

senior pitcher, Hunter, retired the next seven batters he faced. As North Wood struggled to even get on base, Goshen continued to put runners on. In the top of the third, Goshen scored the go-ahead run following a single, two walks and a sacrifice fly, giving them a 3-2 lead. Goshen scored again in the top of the fourth, after sophomore Jake Drudge used a ground-rule double to score junior Aaron Seming from second, who led the inning off with a double of his own. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Armington started things off with a lead-off double. The senior then moved on to third base on an errant throw to first base, and later scored on a fielder's choice-RBI from senior Austin Yoder. "Brock has done a great job," Davis said about the senior, who ended the day with a homerun and a double. "He shows up to play every single day." With North Wood down only 43 in the top of the seventh, North Wood junior reliever Chris Hines looked to continue the dominance that he had shown since entering the game in the top of the fourth. Instead, Goshen got its first three batters on base, and scored three runs in the inning, upping its lead to 7-3 with only a half inning remaining. In the bottom of the seventh, junior pinch-runner Cory Reinhardt came around to score on a groundout by senior Kiser Chamberlin, but it wouldn't be enough to take the Northern

Lakes Conference battle. The loss left North Wood with a 2-5 record in the NLC, but with the conference schedule only half over, Davis is hoping for better results during his team's second trip through the conference. "We're disappointed with where we are at right now, there's no question about it," he said. "We had high aspirations on what we could do this year in the conference, and we've lost some close games. I think we'll be a better team the second time around, than we were the first time around."
