Plain and Fancy enters 20th year at Amish Acres
Plain and Fancy, the 1955 Broadway musical comedy about Amish life and love, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary season at Amish Acres, having been seen by over 300,000 people in 3,200 performances. The Round Bam Theatre has additionally produced 61 Broadway musicals in the last decade, producing perhaps more musicals than any regional theatre in America during that time. It was 1997, on a warm May evening, when nearly 100 people warily took seats in the newly constructed replica Locke Township Meeting House to watch the first performance of Plain and Fancy at Amish Acres. They came because curiosity got the best of them. Once inside, they saw a 12-by-16-foot stage raised six inches off the pine plank flooring, a quilt hung on the wall behind, an upright piano sat stage right, a row of residential track lights made an open square on the ceiling and, most importantly, four actors to play five parts! Dennis McKeen, played Papa Yoder and Peter Reber, sans beard, a deft slight of hand trick unnoticed unless it was raining during his exterior entrances

and exits. The tiny production was produced by Jill Stover and directed by Jeffrey Kope. Little did the actors, or the audience, know that the hour and a half of music, dancing, laughing, heartache, love and applause would be repeated over 3,000 times by 207 actors in the next 19 years. To extend the celebration, Forever Plaid, Bye Bye Birdie, Camelot, Fiddler on the Roof and A Christmas Carol will fill the remaining playbill in 2006. The anniversary season will bookend the repertory productions with Plain and Fancy (April 18 to Oct. 28) and Fiddler on the Roof (Sept. 19 to Oct. 29), Joseph Stein's first and most famous shows. The stage of the Round Barn Theatre was named for and dedicated to Stein in 1997. Plain and Fancy opened 51 years ago on Broadway and ran for 372 performances at the Winter Garden Theatre before moving to London for an even longer run. It was the first show for neophyte librettist Joseph Stein and composer Albert Hague. Stein was pictured recently in Vanity Fair with the writing team surrounding Cid Ceaser and his Show of Shows. the entertainment industry; Show of Shows ended the year Plain and Fancy opened on Broadway. Plain and Fancy came to be through the desire of producer Richard Kolmar, in order to replicate the benefit that Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! had on that state. Kolmar sent Stein to Pennsylvania to write a show, but neither the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin or Independence Hall drew the interest of Stein like the Amish of Lancaster County. He then returned to New York with a 50 cent tourist book of ersatz "Dutch" phrases and put his ideas on paper. Hague, on the other hand, a German immigrant who escaped Hitler's grasp, became the composer by mistake. His rejected audition sheet was put on the call-back pile, because the producers thought a German would be in tune with the Amish subject of Plain and Fancy. Hague had never heard of the Amish, but that didn't matter as both men went on to win a Tony award for their later works: Stein's Fiddler on the Roof and Hague's Redhead. Fancy foretold the creation of Amish Acres the following year and the coming of Plain and Fancy in 1985. Plain and Fancy started with a cast of four, an upright piano and residential spot lights. Now, 20 years later, an orchestra loft is filled with electronic drums, and two keyboards and 48 circuits have grown to 96. A counterweight fly system and major remodeling with scissor trusses have also enhanced the theatre, yet Plain and Fancy remains the centerpiece of Indiana's only resident repertory regional musical theatre. The slate of over 300 performances for 2006 will commence in April with Plain and Fancy and conclude with the final performance of A Christmas Carol on New Year's Eve followed by fireworks. The theatre's home has evolved into the magnificent 400-seat, state-of-the-art relocated Round Bam Theatre, that has become an architectural landmark at the historic farm. Call the box office at 800-800-4942 ext. 2 for tickets or view special offers online at www.amishacres.com.
