races kept getting bigger and the soap box cars kept getting better. Today youths can build their race cars from purchased kits. Sponsors often supply the $425 for the kit in return for having their name on the car. Adults supervise the youngster building of the kit cars, but the youngsters are encouraged to complete the car by themselves. Three divisions of cars are raced. Stock and Super Stock for 9 through 16-year olds, and Masters for 11 through 16-year olds. Youths must be able to fit in the cars. Car and driver are weighed prior to the race and weight is added to keep race cars equal. Approximately 40 cars are involved in racing in pairs against each other down a ramp and paved street at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds in Goshen in June. Each driver races a minimum of four times during the double elimination event. For more information contact Chris Westerbeek 574-533-2006 or Mike Smith 574-534-5933.
