AEMMER, Continued from Front thing to upset him, Aemmer sent his son to his room while he calmed himself down. After returning to lecture his son, he received a lesson himself. "He told me, 'Dad, when you yell at me, it's hard for me to hear you.'," he said. "That was coming from a 5-year old boy." That episode made him re-evaluate how he reacts to certain situations, and he commented that by looking at who you really are, can be beneficial. "Looking inside is skill-based," he said. "The more we practice the strategy of looking inside the better we become at recognizing and changing faulty logic and its influence on our emotions and behaviors." Later in his presentation, Aemmer said that our feelings sometimes project our views on outside situations, but with control, we can overcome negative emotions. "Taking responsibility for what you think and feel can lead to new levels of freedom and power to build better outcomes in every area of life," he said. Citizens may utilize the food service once a month, but Open Door also helps house transits who may come through Nappanee. "We help all the poor," Hank said. "People just coming through town, who may not have a place to stay, will go to the police department, and they'll set them up with a hotel. We then pay for it." Open Door began in Nappanee back in 1971, with Hank taking over the duties of Executive Director 20 years ago. Since then, the non-profit organization has moved from place to place until recently setting up shop at the Train Depot. Perhaps because of their work with Open Door, the couple was named the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce's Citizens of the Year in 2004. improve the lives of others, they may not have been able to do it without each other. In staying together for so long, there may have been only one change in Hank. "I might have mellowed a little,"_Hank said. ' "He used to be pretty quick to lose his temper," Ruby agreed. While his temper may have caused some disputes, Hank's sense of humor is still prevalent. "The only trouble we have is when she doesn't listen," Hank said with a smile. Hank may have been making jokes, but Ruby says that he's actually become more serious with age. "He has gotten more serious as we've gone along," she said, contradicting what one might see when he and his friends get together. While talking with the two, it's obvious how the two have gotten along, but Ruby points out that during the 65 years, it hasn't all been peaches and cream. "We've had our ups and downs, like all people," she said. "If we said we didn't, we'd be lying." "We've just had a lot of give and take," she added.
