‘Blind Boys’ look to spread gospel
GOSHEN —Winners of four consecutive Grammy awards, the immensely popular Blind Boys of Alabama are continuing to expand the definitions - as well as audiences - of gospel and soul more than 65 years since the original group was formed. The all-male ensemble will bring its spirit and energy to the stage of Sauder Concert Hall at Goshen College at 7:30 p.m. on March 10 as part of the 200506 Performing Arts Series. Founded at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939, The Blind Boys of Alabama have been spreading their love of music for over 60 years. The group played the traditional gospel circuit for 40 years before receiving a role in "The Gospel at Colonus," a hit musical. In 1992, the group released an album in which, for the first time, they 'gospelized' contemporary songs, garnering them their first Grammy nomination. Although they released two more albums in 1995 and 1997, it wasn't until their 2001 album "Spirit of the Century" that the group reached new levels of acclaim. Winning the first of four Grammy awards for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album, the Blind Boys found themselves becoming popular with a new, contemporary audience. In 2002 they were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame,
Teach good habits for a good life
The Maximum Health Story teaches us to become as healthy as we can. A big part-of Maximum Health is providing the knowledge of better health for ourselves, but what about our kids? What can we do to better integrate our children with healthy habits? Perhaps the most important lesson that we teach our children every day is how we live our lives. Our children see us every day. They do not limit their observation to what is good and positive about our behavior. They see it all: the good, the bad, and the ugly. When we go to bed on time to allow for ample rest, our children see our good example. They will respond well to our suggestion to get to bed on time if they see the parents doing a good job getting enough rest. They also will notice if we stay up too late and get little sleep. They will learn from our example, either way. Our children also notice what we eat. If we prepare nutritious food to build health, they will learn from it. They will then perpetuate the choice of healthy food habits. The same is true if we cut corners and eat any junk food that is convenient, at any time. The choices that we make will teach our children how and when to eat. Children notice our exercise patterns as well. They know if we work out and exercise on a regular basis. They will copy and emulate that behavior in later life if they see

that good example. If all we do is goof off and sit around in our free time, the children will learn that as well. The exercise choices we make teach our children about how to integrate exercise into their daily routine - or how to sit on life's sidelines, allowing their bodies to deteriorate in a sedentary existence. Our children are aware of our choices in work, play, and recreation. They see the movies that we rent, whether or not we keep a balance between work and play, and what we choose to do with our time. Will they see a balanced life, in which work and play are both valued? Or will they see a life that is all work and no play? Will they see good moral choices on the movie rentals, or a pattern of sleazy choices? And what about your participation in your faith? Your children know if you attend church, temple, or stay at home. Will your children know your faith, or will they go through life thinking that faith is only a

passing curiosity? Medical studies throughout the world show that being on the right side of these issues predicts better health. If you take the time and make efforts for healthy lifestyle - you will make progress. The Circle tire State Choir is an annual event sponsored by the Indiana Music Educators Association and takes place at 12 sites around the state. Each site invites one elementary clinician to work with grades four, five and six, while one middle school clinician works with grades sue, seven and eight. Choral teachers select a group of talented young singers from school, teach them preselected literature, and bring their students to one of the 12 sites for an all-day rehearsal and final performance. This experience gives students the opportunity to work with leading clinicians, join together with other talented singers from the area, and prepare highly advanced quality choral literature. This year's festival for site 2A will take place Saturday, March 4 at the Goshen College Music Cotter. Goshen College is located off State Road 15 and College Avenue in Goshen.
