Waves get set for semi-state
By Anthony Godson Editor As North Wood sophomore Todd Byrket was competing at the high school state swimming meet last weekend, the NorthWood age program was finishing up its regular season. The Wa-Nee Waves closed their regular season last weekend, and now gets set for semistate competition. "The semi-state will be this weekend, and the state meet is scheduled for the third week in March at (Indiana University, Purdue University of Indianapolis)," Waves head coach Thad Grove said. The age program is split up by boys and girls, and also has age groups 10 and Under, 11 to 12 and 13 to 14. Competing at semi-state for Wa-Nee will be 10-year old Destiny Hossler; 11year olds Brittani Grove, Karlie Kratzchmar and Kelsey Weinkauf; 12-year old Trista Grove and 13-year old Jared Lechlitner. With six kids qualifying for semi-state, Grove is pleased with the direction of the program. "It's been a growing program," the coach said. "We have a lot of new, young kids." To qualify for semi-state, swimmers must have met a specified time during the season. In the postseason, a swimmer can participate in up to five events, but for many of the Waves swimmers, they have qualified for more than five. In that case, the swimmers pick the one he or she would like to swim in. Trista Grove has qualified for 11 of 12 events, but expressed joy for one specifically. "I probably like the butterfly the most," the sixth grader at

North Wood Middle School said. "It's the easiest for me." Trista Grove is one of five Wa-Nee swimmers returning to semi-state, along with Brittani, Lechlitner, Weinkauf and Hossler. Trista may have may have also been successful last year, but this year she's making improvements, both in the pool and on the social scene. "I've dropped a lot of time and have met new friends at the competitions," she said. Lechlitner will be competing in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, as well as the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke at semistate. "I love it," he said about swimming. "I've dropped a second off my time in the 50."

Lechlitner's time in the 50 is 26.3, but swimming isn't his only sport. "I play baseball as well," he said. Lechlitner actually made it all the way to the state competition last season, alongside Trista and Brittani Grove. At last year's state meet, Brittani Grove actually scored all of Wa-Nee's 50 points, placing in all five events she participated in. This year, Brittani's cousin Trista hopes to score some state points, as an illness kept her under the weather a year ago. "I'm getting more comfortable with it," she said about competing. Getting comfortable with the sport took some time for Trista, who actually hung up her
coach in attendance. Walk-up registrations the day of the clinic are welcome, but camp Tshirts will only be available to those who pre-register. If there are any questions, call the North Wood ' High School Athletic Office at 773-4127 or coach Nick Davis at 862-9030. Travel League 10 & UNDER Any interested 10-year old and under baseball player is invited to try-out for a roster spot on the 2006 Nappanee 10 & Under Travel League Baseball Team. bathing suit for a while. "In first grade I swam, but I really didn't like it," she said. "By the time I was in third grade, I tried it again, and enjoyed it more." As the swimmers improve, the head coach also credits a growing coaching staff with helping the Waves numbers grow. "We now have a better ratio of coaches to kids," he said. While they can coach a kid all day long, it's ultimately up to the swimmer to improve. "At a certain point, it's up to them to do it," Grove said. For at least six kids on the team, they've shown they want to do it.
