There will be order there without any bruised heads. 100 Years Ago March 7,1906 • C.R. Stoops, Manager of the Nappanee Telephone Co. is installing 150 drop sections to his switch board. He now has about 450 phones in use. • David Detwiler of Foraker, a section hand who was injured Feb. 18th by being thrown from a railroad velocipede while crossing a trestle west of New Paris, died in the Peru Hospital of his injuries. He was 38 jears old. 75 Years Ago March 5,1931 Twenty-three high school pupils visited the Indiana State House in Indianapolis on March 4th under the supervision of Lawrence White, teacher, assisted by Ralph Metzler and Coach Herman Shuler. Rep. Horace Stauffer, our State Representative made arrangements for them to attend the regular session of the lawmakers. 50 Years Ago March 1,1956 • Employees at Blue Bell will get a 19% wage increase. Blue Bell has been in operation in Nappanee 5 years and is operating on i floors. They plan to hire 25 more soon. Payroll in Nappanee is approximately $175,000 this year. • Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Walters, Nappanee's newest business couple, have purchased East Side Grocery at T 064 E. Market from Mr. and Mrs. William Corwin, and will operate it as Walters East Side Market. 25 Years Ago March 4,1981 The Nappanee Chamber of Commerce has announced the appointment of Harold Hoffer, as Executive Vice-President of the Chamber. Hoffer will return to Nappanee June 1, to begin full-time work in the new chamber position. The purpose of the new post is to work full-time for the chamber, with the goal of attracting new business and industry, creating more jobs, and generally helping to maintain and improve the city's general economic and business climate, as well as the city's quality of lift for all. 15 Years Ago Feb. 27,1991 Richard D. Hamman, principal at Central Elementary School, has announced that assistance is being sought in naming the new elementary school being built on CR 52, near North Wood High School. The Wa-Nee Board of School Trustees recently voted to close Central School upon the opening of the new school, some time during the 1991-1992 school year. Hamman has also accepted the responsibility of screening nominations for names for the school, as well as for the school mascot and school colors.

New business moves in downtown
By Anthony Godson Cairo r The Nappanee downtown welcomed a new member on Feb. 22, when Grant Schrock opened his own Mennonite Mutual Aid office at 107 E. Market St. "We're pleased to have Grant Schrock and his group here," Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Larry Andrews said at the rib-bon-cutting. MMA is a church-affiliated organization, which offers financial and insurance services. "I appreciate, so much, everyone that has helped," Schrock said. Among those he thanked was his father and his wife. "My wife, Rhonda, has given me wonderful support," he said. Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson was also on hand for the ribbon cutting. Nappanee FAMILIES FIRST Parents and caregivers of preschoofers will learn how to make the most of each child's individual learning style in a new program offered by Families First. "What’s Your Style " will be held at the Nappanee Public Library on Wednesday, March 15 and 22, from 9:15 to 10 a.m., immediately preceding the'library's morning Preschool storytime. Parents, grandparents, childcare providers and anyone in the community with an interest in child development is invited to attend the twosession program. Caregivers are encouraged to bring children along; childcare will be provided as needed. Participants will discover the characteristics of several different iming styles that appear in early childhood, how to recognize and evaluate them in their own children, and how to then help build daily developmental skills based on these findings. The second class will give parents the chance to create a personalized game for kids based on the past week's evaluation of their children. Families First is a collaboration of Elkhart County businesses and organizations who have joined together to help ensure that all children in Elkhart County are born healthy and ready to learn. Partner organizations in the Wa-Nee area include CAPS, Family Christian Development Center, Goshen General Hospital, Learning Generation Initiative of Elkhart and LaGrange Counties, Meadows Mobile Home Sales, Nappanee and Wakarusa Ministerial Associations, Nappanee Public Library, Wakarusa Public Library and Wa-Nee Community Schools. Partner organizations plan to implement more parenting workshops, newsletters, library resource centers and a variety of other programs to help ensure that every child in Elkhart County is born healthy and enters school ready to learn. STAMP CLUB The Ben Franklin Stamp Club will meet at the Nappanee Public Library on Saturday, March 11. Dr. Forest Kendall, a local collector, is responsible for organization of the club, and leads discussions concerning tips for new and experienced stamp collectors. Mike Oberg will present a screen show at this month's meeting. Anyone in third grade through adult, with an interest in stamp collecting and trading, is invited to attend. Participants learn more about stamps and stamp collecting and participate in games for prizes. The club meets the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. in the library.
