Lightfoot breaks record in a Panther win

By Anthony Godson Editor WALKERTON most exciting way to break a record, but it was a way. With 1:22 left in the third quarter against the John Glenn Falcons (144) on Feb. 14, North Wood senior Ryne Lightfoot sank a free-throw to become North Wood High School’s all-time leading scorer. “It was a goal I had, but it wasn’t really something that I thought was reachable at the beginning of the season," Lightfoot said about eclipsing the 1,552-point mark set by 1995 graduate Andy Hirschy. “Andy Hirschy was a great player, a great shooter, so all the compliments go out to him, and my team mates for getting me the ball at the right position,” the senior added. “Coach (Dan) Gunn has always been a great coach, and always will be. He set up some nice plays for me, to get me some good shots.” Going into the Valentine’s Day game at The Aerie, Lightfoot needed only 13 points to tie Hirschy, with 14 points putting him on top. “I thought he probably would score more than 14 tonight, and if he didn’t, we’d probably be in trouble,” Gunn said. Lightfoot finished the game with 24 points, and even though he did go over 14, North Wood (14-3) still found itself in trouble towards the end. After going up 48-31 with 6:22 left in the game, John Glenn outscored North Wood 31-17 the rest of the way. “You’ve got hit your free throws,” Gunn said about his team’s fourth quarter woes. “We turned it over a couple times, and the officiating kind of changed.” As far as the officiating, John Glenn was whistled for 24 fouls, while North Wood was called for 21. With all the fouls, North Wood went 24-of-34 from the free-throw line.

while John Glenn went 28-of-29. On top of all the fouls, over two minutes of play mysteriously disappeared in the first quarter. Following a bucket by senior Zac Lechlitner, North Wood led 14-5 with 2:57 left in the opening quatler. Points were then given to the wrong team, but as the score was being corrected, the time was also altered. Following the Lechlitner shot, John Glenn had an offensive possession which ended with a Lechlitner steal, but as he dribbled the other way, the first quarter hom sounded. “I looked up at the clock, and it said 1:55,” Gunn said. “We stole the ball, and we’re on a break, then the hom goes off. I thought, maybe, I misread it or something. But we were on a pretty good run right there. That sure squelched it.” Instead of continuing their run, the quarter came to an end, and the error wasn’t noticed until a minute had gone by in the second quarter. By that time, the error had to stand. Even after the mistake, NorthWood extended its lead to 20-7 in the second quarter following a bucket by Lightfoot with 6:17 left in the half. The lead did swell to 23-9 following two free throws by junior Zach Troyer, but the Falcons managed to cut the lead to single digits until junior Kelly Adams connected with six seconds left in the half, putting his team on top 29-18. North Wood continued their dominate play through the third quarter, with the lead getting up to 45-29 following an 8-0 ran that included 3pointers from Troyer and Adams. On Adams’ 3-pointer, Lightfoot was fouled under the basket, which awarded him two free throws on top of the Adams shot. It was then that he set the scoring record. After connecting on his first free throw, the North Wood fans erupted. “I didn’t know until everyone started screaming,” Lightfoot said about his knowledge of how many

points he had in the game. “It was kind of neat.” North Wood held 17-point leads twice in the fourth quarter, but then things got weird. In the fourth quarter, North Wood shot 20 free throws, 12 from Lightfoot, while John Glenn shot 13, three of which resulted in 3-point plays. During the quarter, NorthWood committed only three turnovers, but John Glenn hit nine of their 16 field goals in the quarter, making things very interesting. “They had won 12 in a.row, and when I watched them on tape, I came away thinking that this is one of the better Glenn teams I’ve seen,” Gunn said. lead down to three points four separate times in the last 1:49 of the game, but the 3A. sth-ranked Panthers held on to win against the 2A. 9th-ranked Falcons. With all the bizarre events that happened in the game, it will probably be most remembered by North Wood fans as the game in which Lightfoot set the scoring record. “It’s his competitiveness, and the fact that he works in the offseason on his game,” Gunn said about what makes Lightfoot such a good scorer. “He stays in the weight room, and he really lifts. Some guys go in the weight room, and sit there talking to others. Well, Ryno works. He’s a good role model for all players."
