Mr'McGowen’s Fourth Grade Class Wakarusa Elementary celebrates Red Ribbon Week Last week, Wakarusa Elementary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week. The week started with a multimedia assembly program named "Code Of Honor" which taught us about the lifeskills of caring, obedience and honesty. The program encouraged us to be responsible and think about our actions. Students had the following theme days: Monday, Band Together Against Drugs; Tuesday, Keep Your Hands Off Of Drugs; Wednesday, We Are Too Smart To Start; Thursday, I've Got Better Things To Do Than Drugs Day and Friday, Keep Your Mind Sharp - Don't Do Drugs Each day the students received a small gift to help remind them to make wise choices. Thursday was "Wear Red Day" and students had a contest to see which classroom was wearing the most red. Mr. McGowen's fourth grade class won the contest will all of his 27 students wearing red. The school also held a Red Ribbon Week poster contest. All students in grades first through fifth were encouraged to design a

Poster Contest Winners poster with a drug free message. Three winners from each grade were chosen with the first place winner being awarded $5 from the Wa-Nee Drug Awareness Committee. Winners were: Ist Grade, lst-Desirae Diamond, 2nd-Delaney Shay, 3rd-Katie Pedler; 2nd Grade, Ist- Kelsey Roe, 2nd-Britney Zimmerman, 3rd-Jesus Olvera; 3rd Grade, lst-Elizabeth Balogh, 2nd-Kelsey Nissley, 3rd-Blakely Lengacher; 4th Grade, lst-Candy Correa, 2nd-Cayla Stuteville, 3rd-Haley Schult; sth Grade, lst-Jesse Bontreger, 2nd-Kizzie Trinh, 3rd-Casey Hershberger. Red Ribbon Week is now celebrating it's 20th year. It is a celebrated nationally to bring awareness about drug usage and prevention. Each year the corporation with the help of the Wa-Nee Drug Awareness Committee, plans a special week of activities and reminders to encourage our students to make wise choices and Just Say No!
