Hoke The family of Joanna M. Hoke invites her friends to an open house to celebrate her 90th birthday on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Nappanee Brethren in Christ Church, 1601 N. Main St., Nappanee. Joanna was book keeper for her husband Ralph’s Shell Oil business for many years. She worked as a nurse's aide for a couple of years, and did volunteer work at several hospitals. She and Ralph lived near Garrett for about 50 years, and after Ralph died in 1988, Joanna moved to Nappanee. Even with eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren to enjoy, Joanna finds time for church life, reading cooking, e-mailing family and friends, jigsaw puzzles, Elder Haus activities, feeding and watching her hummingbirds and more. Her children and their spouses are: Stanley and Carol Hoke of Indianapolis, Meredyth and Dan Wollmann of Nappanee and Anita and Andrew Stoner of Fort Wayne.

Kim-Brennaman Lisa Kim and Jason Brennaman were united in marriage at 3 p.m. on July 30, 2005 at the Community Life Center in Indianapolis. The bride wore a strapless, ivory ball gown with a floor-length veil. She carried a rose bouquet. The maid of honor was Amy Hollingsworth of Ohio, friend of the bride. The bridesmaids were Dara Belville of Florida, friend of the bride; Jessica Avery of Indiana, sister of the groom; Tiffany Siciliano of Ohio, friend of the bride, and Adriane McGillis of South Carolina; friend of the bride. The bride's attendants were attired in black, floor-length satin gowns with ivory trim. The best man was Jared Hamsher of Nappanee, friend of the groom. The groomsmen were Joseph Mclean of Muncie, friend of the groom; Sean Brennaman, brother of the groom; Steven Bennett of Muncie, friend of the groom, and Mycal Rodenbeck of Muncie, friend of the groom. The ushers were Tyler Oates of Indiana, friend and Donnie Choe of Colorado, cousin of the bride. The ring bearers were Ty Barnes, cousin of the bride, and Jace Watson, nephew of the groom. The flower girls were McKenzie and Taylor Smith, cousins of the groom. Approximately 230 people attended the reception held at the Community Life Center. The couple took their wedding trip to Maui, Hawaii.

Workers now get 94-1/2 cents to $1.70 per hour and piece-work gets $1.30 to $1.35 per hour. The demand is for 12 cents more hourly or 6 cents per hour more for piece work. They also seek $l4O vacation pay for 2 weeks (after 10 years service), a rate of S7O per week. Average pay has been $1.95 an hr. • 25 Years Ago Oct. 15,1980 The Nappanee Park Board rejected a proposed ordinance of regulations for city parks at its recent meeting, deciding that the ordinance was too involved for the city. A number of local citizens have expressed interest in an ordinance prohibiting the use of liquor and drugs in the parks, regulating vehicle speed, and controlling litter anti abusive language and conduct. The proposed ordinance, prepared by City Attorney Joe Kindig, was more than the board members felt was needed for Nappanee. 15 Years Ago Oct. 10, 1990 In the early morning hours of October 3, Mary Alice Roeder, owner of Roeder's Bakery and Restaurant in Nappanee, passed away after an accident involving her car and a semi truck. According to the Nappanee Police Department, it appeared that Roeder was traveling eastbound on U.S. 6 West near Delaware Street at about 3:05 a.m., crossed the center line and struck a semi truck on the side. The semi was being driven westbound. It was assumed that Mrs. Roeder fell asleep at the wheel of her car.
