Three overtimes needed to fend off Panthers

By Anthony Godson Editor For the second time this year the Warsaw Tigers (8-5) handed the North Wood Panthers (9-4) a loss in overtime, only Jan. 28's 77-73 loss came after three overtimes. "I’m tired too," coach Dan - Gunn said about the game that lasted until after 10 p.m. "I'd guess everyone in the gym was tired." The Panthers fought back from a 34-21 third quarter deficit and a 58-53 deficit with 30 seconds remaining to send the game into the first overtime. "I am awfully proud of our team," Gunn said. " I thought there were several times when we could of have easily said that this- isn't going to happen tonight, but we kept finding a way to tie up. There were probably about 15 opportunities when we could have won the game, but it just didn't work out that way." The Panthers had a tough time corralling Warsaw's Michael Wienhorst, as he scored 30 points on the night, scoring the majority pf his points with mid-range jumpers. "I thought Wienhorst played awfully good game," Gunn said. "He hit some big buckets, and about carried them in the second half." North Wood was led in scoring by junior Rune Lightfoot's 26 points, junior Zac Lechlitner finished with 20 and seniors

Wes BeMiller had 12 and Trevor Shields had 11. The Panthers were all smiles during the first two minutes of the game, jumping out to a 7 1 0 lead, Lechlitner scoring five of the points. Wienhorst pulled his team to within 7-5, but Shields responded with a 3-pointer that pushed the Panthers lead up to 10-5 with 3:32 left in the quarter. Prior to Shields' 3, BeMiller committed his second foul of the game, which put him beside Gunn for the remainder of the first half. "It was kind of strange," Gunn said about stretches of officiating. "They call Wes for a couple of small things, they call him for a hand check, and it was just another game at the other end. It was kind of unusual for a while." BeMiller's importance to the team was evident in his absence. After taking a 10-9 lead into the second quarter, the Panther just looked out of sync on the offensive and defensive end of the court. "He's a good shooter and he's played so well," Gunn said about BeMiller. "He handles the ball, a great assist man and he's tough defensively. He just got a couple of calls at a time when they were letting a lot of things g°" Lightfoot kept pace with the Tigers over the first, two minutes of the quarter, exchanging baskets with them, but the Tigers used a 12-0 in the middle

of the quarter to take a 25-14 lead with 1:56 left in the half. Junior Ben Bemiller added a bucket and Lightfoot hit a free throw down the line, but Warsaw still had a 29-17 lead at the end of the first half North Wood had an offensive outburst in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 23-13, making a game out of it again. Lechlitner, Lightfoot and BeMiller a.i scored six points in the quarter, with BeMiller's last 3 of the quarter, bringing the Panthers to within 42-40 at the end of the quarter. Warsaw pushed its lead back up to 46-40 in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, but free throws by Lechlitner and Lightfoot cut the lead to 46-43 with 5:35 left to play. North Wood tied the game at 49-49 after a Shields' 3-pointer, his third of the game, with 3:40 left in the game. Warsaw extended its. lead back to 53-49 with 1:08 remaining, and even had a chance to pull further ahead a second later, but Shaun Cabrera missed two from the free-throw line, giving the Panthers new life. Lightfoot capitalized on ,the misses by driving the length of the court and scoring a lay-up. Warsaw pushed its lead even larger to 57-51 with 44 seconds left after another Wienhorst bucket, but the Panthers continued to fight through. After BeMiller cut the Tiger lead to 58-56 on his 3, Warsaw's

Nelson Conley then missed two free throws with 17 seconds left. Lightfoot then took the ball the length of the court, hit another lay-up that tied the game at 5858 and sent the game into it's first overtime. North Wood held a 63-61 advantage in the first overtime with 1:21 left to go, but BeMiller wasn't able to extend the lead, missing two free throws at the 1:21 mark. Wienhorst then showed his heroics by tying the game at 63-63 with 1:02 to play. Neither team scored the rest of the overtime, forcing a second overtime. The Panthers were against the ropes again in the second overtime, down by three points with only 13 seconds remaining, but BeMiller responded by getting fouled on a 3-point attempt. BeMiller calmly hit all three of his free throws, sending the game into a third overtime. The third overtime was all Cabrera's, Cabrera scored four of his team's seven points in the period, while North Wood scored only three points, all coming off a Lechlitner 3-point play. "It was a heck of an effort," Gunn said. • WARSAW 77, NORTHWOOD 73 At Warsaw Score by Quarters Warsaw' 9 20 13 16 5 7 7- 77 N-Wood 10 7 23 18 5 7 3-73 Warsaw: Shaun Cabrera 6 2-4 14: John-Wesley Maierle 3 2-4 8:
