Lehman kicks her way to the top
By Anthony Godson Advance News Editor Punt the ball, pass the ball and kick the ball; All terms one would associate with what an NFL team would need to do and do well, to make into the playoffs. But for one Nappanee girl, those three things almost got her into the NFL playoffs as well. Kelcie Lehman, a seventh grade student at North Wood Middle School placed first for Indiana in her 12-13 age group, at the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition held in Indianapolis on Dec. 5. "It was exciting," Kelcie said about the experience. Kelcie and four other girls in her age group, competed in the RCA Dome before the Dec. 5 match-up between the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans. The kids were then introduced during halftime of the game. "It was packed," Kelcie's mom, Jill, said. "It was soldout, and with her competing, we were able to watch the game." Kelcie was the winner in Indiana and placed her sixth in the country, with 10 more teams yet to compete. The top four then go on to the national competition during a NFL playoff game. Kelcie was first introduced to the competition when it was at the Nappanee Apple Festival two years ago. She didn't received any competition in Nappanee, but competed against five other girls at the regional competition in Charabusco. She didn't go on to the state level that year, but the 13-year old pulled it off this year and has bigger goals next year. "Hopefully I will back there next year and (go on to nationals)," she said. Even though she did win in the State of Indiana, Kelcie feels she could have done better. She punted the ball 83' 11", kicked it 116' 9", but passed the ball only 61' 10", below her average. "It kind of just rolled off my fingers," Kelcie said about the pass. "I could have done better." The almost 62-foot pass was short compared to the pass that went over 90 feet at the regional competition. The subdued Kelcie wasn't overly excited about her performance, but her dad, Don, might have been. "I think her dad's more excited about it," Jill said. During the Dec. 6 meeting of the City Council, Mayor Larry Thompson noted that he had received a call from Don, relaying Kelcie's performance. ADVANCE NEWS PHOTO/A.W. GADSON Kelcie Lehman was given a plaque and jersey for her finish. "Although she may not go on to nationals, she has been a great representative of Nappanee," Thompson said at the meeting. Kelcie may want to improve her performance at next year's competition, not only to go to a playoff game, but maybe for other reasons. "She's always wanted a puppy, and we told her if she wins the competition, she can get one," Jill said. "So that's her inspiration."
20 Years Ago Dec. 19,1984 Dr. Michael Borger, physician with North Wood Physicians, Inc., and also Physician Medical Director for the Nappanee EMS, directs ed a detailed presentation before the Common Council, in their Monday, Dec. 17th meeting, dealing with problems with the state of the EMS Commission. Nappanee EMS Director, Mike Stull, spoke about unfair advantages for paid personnel versus the already full time employed volunteer, in trying to reach the paramedic status through schooling. The EMS Commission, in their Jan. 1983 ruling, made it impossible for anyone other than the doctor or the paramedic to deliver IV medication or defibrillation, "shocking" the heart. They ruled only IV fluids may be started and administered by Advanced EMT's, and that's all. 10 Years Ago Dec. 14,1994 Wa-Nee Superintendent Jerry Lelle recommended students and teachers begin plans to occupy the Nappanee Elementary building for the first time, Tuesday, Dec. 20.
