Panthers show who’s the ‘King’ of the court
By Anthony Godson Advance News Editor For the second game in a row, a girls basketball entered The Pit with an undefeated record, but didn't leave with it. On Nov. 27 it was South Bend Adams and its 3-0 record, and on Nov. 30 it was the Penn Lady Kingsmen and its 5-0 record. The North Wood Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Kingsmen 48-37, behind a balanced scoring attack, led by senior Lauren Zeltwanger's 14 points, three steals and three assists. "Penn's a quality team," coach Steve Neff said. "They were 5-0, and our old assistant coach (Scott Geist now coachs) there, so we had a little more incentive. They probably knew a little bit more about us too, but we played pretty well." The Black Swish was helped out in scoring by seniors Audrey Duncan (9), Carrie Egging (8) and sophomore Mandy Yoder (7). Egging also led the team with seven rebounds. For the first time this season, The Pit had the atmosphere that is has preceded it. Load crowds and a raucous band, and the Black Swish did not disappoint. They jumped out to a 13-0 lead, which included two 3pointers by Zeltwanger and one by Egging. Pain's first point didn't come until Amanda Barrier hit a pair of free throws with 1:47 left in the quarter. The free throws weren't only big

Senior Lauren Zeltwanger looks for an open Panther:
because they put Penn on the board, but because they were a result of the second foul on Duncan, which put her on the bench for the rest of the half. "She knows that's always been a problem," Neff said. "She just needs to relax. She hasn't fouled out lately, but has been picking up two quick ones." With two fouls on two of his post players, Duncan and senior Jen Kurtz, Neff went to the bench, where junior Brittany Hall served as a good stop gap.

"Brittany came in and did an excellent job," Neff said. "All the people I put in came in and had their moments." The Black Swish got hit its biggest lead of the game with 5:48 to play in the half, after a Yoder field goal put the team up 20-4. Penn got the lead down to 20-9, but Zeltwanger hit her third of four 3-pointers, her team was back out in front 23-9. North Wood took a 25-11 lead into the half, but Penn came out with a vengeance to open the third quarter. Penn opened the second half with a 12-0 run, which brought the Lady Kingsmen to within 25-23. Coach Neff was forced to call a time-out with 4:39 left in the quarter to settle things down. "They just weren't working on defense," he said of his team. "Man to man defense wasn't working, so we switched to a zone. I think that helped their psyche a little bit and it seemed to work." Following the time-out, the Black Swish finished out the quarter on a -10-0 run, putting the team back on top 35-23. With their focus back on defense, the Black Swish kept the lead in double digits the entire fourth quarter, on its way to the 48-37 win. • NORTHWOOD 48,
