Black Swish wins cat fight

By Anthony Godson Advance News Editor Bremen and North Wood High Schools are only separated by eight miles, but the two girls basketball programs are still miles apart, as the Black Swish (6-1) defeated the Lady Lions (0-5) 60-31 at The Pit on Dec. 2. "Their 0-4 record is a little misleading," coach Steve Neff said of Bremen. Bremen opened its season playing some strong girls basketball programs in Goshen, Tippecanoe Valley and Plymouth. The Lions have also been without injured senior center Alii Gurbick, which made it even tougher for them to defend the height of North Wood. The Black Swish got the 29point victory without any scoring from senior Carrie Egging and six points from sophomore Mandy Yoder. "It was a little bit physical in the beginning, and that took (Egging) out of her game a little bit, and Mandy missed a lot of uncharacteristic shots, "Neff said. "Bremen threw a little bit of Triangle 2 at us, so that was nice. They pressed us a little, and that gives us something to work on, and go from there." While they struggled to score, the two girls did step it up in other categories with Egging collecting seven boards and three assists, while Yoder led the team with six steals. Senior Lauren Zeltwanger led the team with 17 points, going 11 for 12 from the freethrow line. Senior Audrey Duncan scored with easy, accounting for 12 points, but because of foul trouble, was Hmited in her minutes. It wasn't only Duncan that found herself in foul trouble, as

Jen Kurtz also joined Duncan in the two fouls in the first quarter club. Freshman Mackenzie Lechlitner finished the game with four fouls and Egging finished with three, as the three referees were quick on the whistle. "Early on we got a little too aggressive," Neff said. "We were trying to make steals, and they weren't there, rather than wait on it." With his team collecting fouls, Neff used his bench a little more, preparing for the upcoming conference schedule. "It was a win," Neff said. "We were able to play a lot of people, but it wasn't a thing of beauty to watch. We've got a lot of things to work on, but it was a good game for our depth. (Senior)' Brittany Hall and Mackenzie got a lot of playing time, and so did some of the other girls. We'll take that, but -we still have to pass the ball better, shoot free throws better and cut down on turnovers." Turnovers are something Neff has been trying to cut down on all season, and will need to as the Black Swish's next three games are against Elkhart Central, Elkhart Memorial (Dec. 10) and Plymouth (Dec. 16). "We have three tough conference teams in a row, then we play Warsaw the first game of the NLC tournament, so we'll see where we're at by Christmas Break," Neff said.

Boys win season opener against the Triton Trojans

By Anthony Godson Advance News Editor It took the North Wood Panthers a little settling in, but the team opened the 2004-2005 season with a win, defeating the Triton Trojans 75-36 at The Pit on Dec. 3. "It's a win, and that's what you want," coach Dan Gunn said following the game. "I thought we played hard. Defensively, we did a good job of getting into the passing lanes, and keeping pressure on the balL" The defensive pressure helped to force 17 Trojan turnovers, after they only committed one in the first quarter. "They've played two games, we haven't played any, and there's a big difference," Gunn said of his team's slow start. "The first game is always a wake up call. You never know what's going to happen." Junior Ryne Lightfoot got the Panther season underway, scoring the team's first five points in the first minute on his way to a game-high 22 points. "Ryne Lightfoot had the flu this week, and I thought you could tell that," Gunn said. "So he had the flu and had 22 points, so I think he did pretty well." Junior Zac Lechlitner scored four points in the opening quarter as well, but Triton hung around at 12-7 after the opening quarter. The two teams battled throughout the second quarter, with Triton climbing to within 23-17 at the 1:57 mark in the half, but that's when North Wood exploded. From that point on through the end of the third quarter, North Wood used a 31-6 run to take a 54-23

Zac Lechlitner lead going into the final quarter. "When you shoot well, everything looks good," Gunn said. Gunn got a balanced scoring attack with Lightfoot's 22, Lechlitner's 16 and senior Wes BeMiller's 13, but he was also impressed with other aspects of their game. "Wes BeMiller played well. He had some nice passes and did a nice job on defense," the winning coached said. "Zac Lechlitner had a lottos steals." While the Panther guards were harassing the Trojan backcourt, Gunn was pleasantly surprised with his interior defense. "I thought our defense on the inside was a little better than I thought it was going to be, and that was good to see," he said. With one win under their belts, the Panthers now wait to host Westview this Thursday. "Westview plays hard," Gunn said of his next opponent. • NORTHWOOD 75, TRITON 36 At North Wood Score by Quarters NW 12 212121 —75 ' Triton 710 6 13 —36 NW: Zac Lechlitner 5 6-10 16; Ryne Lightfoot 9 2-4 22; Wes BeMiller 6 0-013; Trevor Shields 2 0-0 4; Kelly Adams 2 0-1 4;
