to court for a hearing. If the check writer is eligible for the program, he or she is then given a date to which all fines and restitution must be paid. If it is not paid by the deadline, the defendant will then be prosecuted. The program was initiated in the first week in November, and 20 people had signed up for it in the first week. According to Jeter, all but three had paid the money back. Hill also cited that the program pays for itself through user fees. “There is no cost to the taxpayer," he said. The cost to be in the program is $l7O plus $52 per bad check. The program is only open to people who have written three or fewer bad checks. Brenda Miller of Scottish Bed and Breakfast in Bremen, was happy with the program. "The businesses have needed this for years," she said. Along with just informing local merchants on their diversion program, Jeter also informed them on what to look for when it comes to people writing bad checks. She used the acronym SANDI as a guideline.
Missionary Church set for Christmas musical
By popular demand, Nappanee Missionary Church will host a repeat of the special Christmas musical, "All Is Calm, All Is Bright," on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. in the church. Presented by the Worship Team of the church, this extraordinary Christmas offering will feature the 180 voice Worship Choir and NMC musicians on solos and narration with the 25 piece NMC Band and Winds. On Saturday night only, a special fellowship time with coffee, cookies and cider will be held in the 9,000 square foot Grand Hall from 6 - 6:45. Special Christmas music by Kent Heckaman on the piano will set the tone for this Saturday only event. In the current global atmosphere of uncertainty and per-

S - Double check the signature on the check. A - Compare the amounts between the dollar amount and the amount written in. "Some people will write 'Two Fifty', instead of 'Two Hundred and Fifty’," Jeter pointed out. "Sometimes it's an honest mistake. I've done it before." N - Check the check number, and be careful of numbers between 100 and 150, because they are new accounts. "85 percent of bad checks are written on new accounts,” Jeter said. D - Make sure the date is accurate, and be cautious of checks that are post dated, because they will not qualify for the program. Keith Klotz, of Schmucker's L.P. Gas, said he receives most of his checks through the mail, and many of them are post dated. "Half the checks we get are bad," he said. "We hate to see post dated checks, because it might take two to three months to collect." In Klotz's line of work, a tight rope must be walked between keeping the customer happy and getting restitution. I - Have all the proper information such as the writer's name, address, phone num-

Personal peace that comes from a relationship with the one whose birth we celebrate at Christmas, Jesus Christ. Worldwide and permanent peace that is promised in the second advent of Christ. her and driver's license. Jeter also recommended the person accepting the check initial it to verify who in fact took the check. Doing this makes the prosecutor's job much easier. "I talked to one prosecutor who told me that check deception cases are a pain and a hard case to prove," Jeter said. "A linkage must be found to the bad check writer v " Along with initialing the check, a video tape of the person signing the check or retrieving a fingerprint of the check writer can also be done, both of which are done by the larger corporate businesses. Jeter warned merchants about this time of year, when businesses are hectic. "They pry off that," Jeter said of bad check writers. "Thev will try to get you distracted." Warning signs of bad checks may include: ''A'check with no perforated edge; A company check with the name typed in or made with a rubber stamp; A check written on an out of town bank; A check with incomplete information; Alterations of erasures."
