Designating the depot

By Anthony Godson Advance News Editor Things change as time goes by, but the Nappanee Historical Preservation Committee wants to make sure the Baltimore & Ohio Depot doesn't. The committee is looking into making the train depot a Local Designated Site, which would make it difficult for any changes to occur on the building. The depot is already marked in the National Register of Historical Landmarks, which only regulates what happens to the building through public money. By getting the building named a Local Designated Site, even if a private entity purchased the building from the city, no change could be made to the building without the approval of the committee. "The current mayor and council wouldn't do anything to the building, but who knows what elected officials in the future would do," committee member Bob Yapp said. Committee Chairman Rob Wenger agrees. "It could go into private hands, and have changes made

to it or be demolished," Wenger said. Wenger and Yapp will be speaking with Mayor Larry Thompson about making the building a Designated Site, and the committee is hoping to then get the issue on a city council agenda. "The train depot is the obvious first choice," Yapp said about designating the building.’ In Indiana statutes, a commission can make the recommendation for a building to be declared a Local Designated Site, which is not the case in all states. In some, the public must make the recommendation, then get signatures from a historical society members before it gets on an agenda.

the of the Public Works and Safety drew citizen input on the parking dilemma on Walnut Street.
