Panthers defeat

Several North Wood players face injuries this week BY KERN BOUGH CORRESPONDENT WA-NEE—The North Wood Panthers opened sectional play last Friday at Andrews Field with a 31 -7 victory over the West Noble Chargers. The Panthers will travel to Culver Military Academy this Friday for their second round sectional game. The Panthers played without leading scorer Derren Lengacher who suffered a partial knee sprain in practice last week. Lengacher could miss two to four weeks. Trainer Paul Widner reports three other injuries that hindered North Wood. Michael Ramirez injured a shoulder and, as a precautionary move, did not play the second half against West Noble. Quarterback Kiser Chamberlin suffered a bruised right thigh. Also, ball boy Nate Pugh suffered an injury to his face. Widner has indicated that Ramirez and Chamberlin will be ready to play in the CMA game. Pugh’s condition will be evaluated on a day to day basis and a decision on his availability for the CMA game will be made at game time on Friday. The North Wood Black Crunch defense was in control most of this game, but did not consistently dominate the Chargers as they have some opponents in recent games. The Chargers were able to move the ball effectively on the ground and with some timely passing did produce some long, sustained drives. The Panthers did hold junior standout Matt Vance to 35 yards on 16 carries. Vance had earned over 1,000 yards on the season. The Chargers had 299 yards of total offense for the game with 150 rushing and 149 passing. Head Coach Monte Mawhorter and his Chargers finish the season at 5-5. Michael Ramirez had a strong first half for the Panthers. He scored twice on runs of 3 and 28 yards, and caught a pass from Chamberlin for a 47-yard TD. Kiser Chamberlin helped the Panthers with 78 yards rushing on nine carries. His 146 yards passing included the 47-yard pass to Ramirez and a 52-yard bomb to sophomore Brant Ehret. Hard running junior, Kyle Lehman, did a nice job filling in for Lengacher with 50 yards on six carries.

The Eagles have a three game winning streak going into the North Wood game. They have averaged scoring of almost 20 points a game this year, while giving up almost 25 points per game. The Panthers are no strangers to the CMA. North Wood eliminated the Eagles in sectional action last year and the Eagles would like nothing better than to return the favor. According to the CMA website the Eagles are expecting a "tremendous showdown." Vj The Eagle offense will remind many Panther fans of Jimtown. Head coach Andrew Dorrell likes to use a fullback and two wings with some motion on many plays. While the Eagles don't like to pass, they are capable of hurting opponents with the big passing play. CMA can be very strong against the run. Their basic defense is a 5-2, but they will give North Wood several different defensive looks with a variety of shifts and movements.
