when the time had come for a new generation to take over. The successors were Bill and Wendell Metzler, who were first cousins. The two gentlemen handled operations and managed affairs for a respectable run of nearly 40 years. Upon the men’s departure, two of Bill Metzler's children took on the lofty and honorable responsibilities of keeping the family business thriving. Dan Metzler "number three" and his sister. Diana Davis, are the current owners of the Metzler Shoe Store, and they have worked diligently to maintain the store's exemplary reputation since the mid 1980 s. Presently, Dan's daughter, Haley, can be found lending her expertise to the staff on occasion. which means that since the earliest days of the Metzler Shoe Store, four generations pf family members have kept the legacy alive. Metzler adapts Many Nappanee residents are familiar with Diana's previous retail experiences as the owner of the Metzler Shoe Store annex called “The Store Next Door.” which sold fine apparel and other items. „ That business finessed its own way into Nappanee lore by surpassing more than 20 years as a South Main Street fixture. Only in recent years did Diana decide to close The Store Next Door, not because the facility wasn't enjoying resounding successes, but because she felt a desire to be closer to her family. Metzler Shoe Store, itself, has weathered many precarious events over the years. First, there was the Great Depression, and then a number of troubled economic periods. And then there was the tragedy of September 11. 2001. a time where retailers struggled with a different level of customer concerns. Yet Dan Metzler notes that being a store with a particular and ynique focus can have tremendous advantages. “If you don't have a small, niche business. If you don't specialize, you're sunk.” Dan declared with his trademark boisterous but upbeat nature. Both Dan and Diana note that the store offers a broad and full range of quality footwear, which includes representations of mainstream fashion, to exclusive European stylings, to shoes that benefit those with special orthopedic needs. Diana observed. “It's an evolutionary process. Over the years, we've been upscaling., while trying to help people with foot problems. “And when they come back, they say 'thank you,' and they tell you how much it made a difference for them," she added. “That's very rewarding." Dan added. "We feel like we want to make a statement. We're always looking for something that's better.” Ralph Metzler would be a proud man to know that his dream lives on.
