NAPPANEE Young families are the focus of a tartnership that is bringing together many Elkhart County irganizations in a new way. Families First is a team effort in which county, city nd community agencies are joining together with public nd private organizations such as hospitals and businesss to help the families in Elkhart County become healthy, lappy and self-sufficient. Partner organizations plan to include home visitation, larenting workshops, newsletters, library resource ceners and a variety of other programs to help ensure that very child in Elkhart County is bom healthy and enters chool ready to learn. Goals of the local initiative are to enhance family unctioning, promote healthy child growth and deveiopnent and promote positive parent-child relationships. The first of the Families First programs in Elkhart bounty are underway in Nappanee and Wakarusa areas vith the help of the following partner organizations: ; amily Christian Development Center, CAPS and Family iervices. Elkhart General Hospital, Goshen General -lospital. Learning Generation of Elkhart and LaGrange bounties, Meadows Mobile Home Sales, Nappanee Ministerial Association, Nappanee Public Library, Vakarusa Ministerial Association, Wakarusa Public library and the Wa-Nee School Corporation.

Elkhart and Goshen hospitals are each offering Childbirth Preparation classes at the Nappanee Public Library this fall. And a workshop called Praise, Encouragement and Self-Esteem will be conducted at the Nappanee Library in November. So far. plans after the first of the year include hosting quarterly Child Development programs called Ages and Stages. In addition, every six months, parents will be invited to “Ask A Doctor” sessions. Also twice a year, a 3-part series called “My Kids are Driving Me Crazy!” will focus on discipline issues and using logical consequences to motivate good behavior. Most classes will be offered at no cost. Meals and childcare are available free for all classes and workshops. “What is unique about Families First is that we are pulling together organizations with similar missions, andby pooling or sometimes redirecting our resources, we are able to put into action now programs that will begin to impact our community right away,” said Nappanee Library Director Linda Yoder. More program partners and volunteers are needed and will be recruited soon. United Way kicks off fall campaign
WA-NEE The United Way of Elkhart County recently kicked off its annual fund raising drive, and many of the funds collected directly benefit those within the Wa-Nee community. In 1993, 2,338 members of the Wa-Nee community were benefited due to United Way donations. The following local organizations received funds from the - United Way: ADEC Works with people with unique challenges to help them meet their goals and dreams. American Red Cross Provides relief to victims of disaster and prepares for emergencies. Big Brothers Big SistersMentors children with adults that serve as friends and role models. Nappanee Boys & Girls Club Inspires young people to realize their full potential as responsible citizens. Boy Scouts, LaSalle Council Prepares young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime. Camp Fire Council Builds caring, confident youth through after-school and summer programs. Child Abuse Prevention Services Coordinates services to prevent child abuse and treat victims. Center for Community Justice Promotes and operates communitybased services for victims and offenders. Council on Aging Helps older adults to enjoy life in the comfort of their own home. Cystic Fibrosis Council Promotes awareness and provides support to families affected by Cystic Fibrosis Elkhart Child Development Center Provides quality childcare for low-income families. United Labor Agency Provides needs and services for industrial and service workers. Walnut Hill Early Child Center Supplies activities and care to pre-school children at affordable rates. YMCA Puts Christian principles into practice in programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for youth and families. The United Way also provides funds to Nappanee’s Elder Haus, Open Door and Family Christian Development Center. The FCDC recently applied to become a member agency of the YMCA. This year’s fundraising goal for Elkhart County is $2.9 million, and every dollar counts. Clugston awarded achievement medal
SAN ANTONIO, Texas Matthew A. Clugston was recently promoted to First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for outstanding achievement as Health Facilities Division Engineering Officer, Facilities Management and Engineering Branch, Air Force Medical Support Agency, Office of the Surgeon General, Brooks CityBase, Texas. Lt. Clugston’s outstanding professional skill, knowledge, and leadership aided immeasurably in the extremely successful, time-critical award of thirteen million dollars in medical facility repair contracts. As one of the Suigeon General’s leading experts on health care facilities engineering, Lt. Clugston was highly instrumental in the development and coordination of over 38 essential repair projects that will greatly improve the safety and operation of Air Force medical facilities around the globe. His calm and decisive leadership in the midst of a chaotic end-of-year spending environment achieved an unparalleled expenditure of project funds. His relentless efforts with medical groups, major command, and contracting agents targeted costeffective resolutions of the most critical infrastructure deficiencies. The distinctive accomplishments of Lt. Clugston reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. Lt. Clugston was also selected to participate in a five-nation European tour July 3-18 as a member of the United States Combined Services Men’s Rugby Team. Clugston has played rugby for eight years and has been selected to the All-Air Force team twice. This was his first tour with the Combined

First Lieutenant Matthew A. Clugston
Services Team. The tour started and ended in Germany and included stops in The Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic and France. The trip marked the 10th biannual tour in the history of the Combined Services program. The Combined Services Team consists of players from all five branches of the service who have been invited to play based on their and have shown commitment to becoming the best rugby players in the U.S. military. The honor of representing the military services in competition against some of the best rugby players in the world is not easily obtained, and the privilege of participation in these competitive events reflects greatly upon the invited personnel and their commands. Lt. Clugston is the son of Conrad and Mary Lou Clugston of Nappanee. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo, in 2002. He is currently stationed in San Antonio, Texas.
