Panthers pound Raiders, 59-7
Tough practices renew spirit By Kern Bough Correspondent If Andrews Field had been a movie theater last Friday, the marquee may well have announced - Now Showing: “The Return of the Black Crunch.” After giving up 38 points in a loss to Wawasee in the Dome last week, the Panthers returned to their traditional dominating style in defeating the Northridge Raiders 59-7. The Panthers scored on their first possession of the night with Michael Ramirez running into the end zone from the two-yard line at 9:58 of the first quarter. The Raiders answered with a textbook drive of 16-plays that moved the ball 82 yards in over eight minutes to score on a four-yard run by Joe Gibson. North Wood then gave a clinic on the importance of special teams and defense in controlling a game. Behind the kicking of Ryan Burkhart and the swarming defense of the Black Crunch, the Raiders were unable to generate any offense in the second quarter and were forced to give the ball, and a short field, to the Panthers on every possession. The Panthers took advantage and scored four touchdowns in the second quarter to build a 35-7 lead. The Panther defense allowed the Raiders 114 yards of total offense for the game, with 73 yards rushing and 41 yards passing. The Raiders had seven first downs for the game. Northridge’s opening drive of the night accounted for 82 of those yards and four of their first downs. Jason Hochstetler led the North Wood defense pvith eight tackles. Senior Kirk Mast had six tackles find two sacks. North Wood’s offensive line provided great blocking for the Panther running backs and time for Quarterback Kiser Chamberlin to throw. ! Line coach Mark BeMiller was pleased to see the line “more aggressive with better technique.” The line play helped the Panthers generate 20 first downs and 501 yards of total offense. Derren Lengacher had a huge night behind the
play of the offensive line. The junior rushed for 108 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns while catching three passes for 106 yards and one 47-yard touchdown. All is not lost for the Northridge Raiders. Despite dropping to 1-5 for the season the Raiders are making progress. Second-year head coach Jonathan Kirkton has brought new life to the Northridge program. His players are obviously well coached and they played hard against the Panthers for four quarters despite the score. North Wood is now 5-1 and 3-1 in the NLC. The Wawasee victory over Plymouth creates a tie for the conference lead with North Wood, Plymouth, Wawasee, and Concord sharing a 3-1 NLC record.

only reason the group is more visible at football and basketball games is because the larger crowds provide a better opportunity to sell North Wood merchandise. All the proceeds from that merchandise is evenly distributed throughout the athletic department. One recent example is a new ice machine for the department. Lehman said the machine, donated by the Captain’s Club, provides ice for all the school’s athletes, plus gym classes and the band.
The Panthers will host a very dangerous Elkhart Memorial team this Friday. Veteran coach Phil Teegarden’s squad started the season trying to replace a senior class that led the Crimson Chargers to only one loss in the 2003 season. After six weeks of the current season the Chargers are starting to play some good football and have a record of 2-4. Memorial will be angry after a tough 21-20 loss to a good Mishawaka Marian team last Friday. Memorial had an early 14-0 lead but a series of mistakes cost them a chance at victory. Kickoff for the game at Andrews Field will be 7 p.m.
He also added that the club makes signs, provide snacks at away games and provides Tshirts for student athletes. Plus, it provides funds for the special needs of the athletic department. The club is governed by a Board of Directors, all of which represent one of the 19 sports at North Wood. Anyone can be a member of the club. The base membership is $25, with a Red & Black Club for SSO and the Gold Club at SIOO. For more information, call 773-4127.
