Panthers rout Lions: 34-7

Now ranked 2nd in the state for 3A

By Ken Fox For the Advance News BREMEN— The North Wood Panthers feasted on their second straight Northern State Conference football team last Friday to remain undefeated. And sure, the scoreboard read North Wood 34 and Bremen 7, but listen to the coaches following the game and you’d have a hard time knowing which man was prouder. North Wood coach Rich Dodson, a Bremen graduate, addressed the Lions following the game. “I have all kinds of respect for the job coach Moren is doing,” Dodson said. “It’s tough to open with two Northern Lakes Conference teams (Bremen lost to Plymouth last week), but his kids have a lot of heart and once they develop some depth, they’ll be a force.” The Panthers are forcing other teams into mistakes mistakes that lead to losses. The Panthers had a 20-7 lead at halftime, although Bremen was within a play or two of having Dodson’s team even more nervous. Trailing 14-0 after two early Panther touchdowns, Brenien quarterback Rob Zeltwanger hooked-up with wide receiver Tim Stillwell for a 63-yard gain all the way down to the Panther 3. Two plays later, the Lions were in the end zone, as junior halfback Alex Mikel found an opening right up the middle to cut the lead to 14-7. North Wood then fumbled on its first play from scrimmage and the Lions’ Nick Gurbick fell on it, giving Bremen the ball at the NHS 32. Zeltwanger then hit Chad Miller for a 12-yard gain to the 20 and the Lions suddenly had all the momentum going their way. Then, just as suddenly, it returned to the Panther sideline. An offside penalty, a sack and an incomplete pass would stall the drive, as the Lions turned the ball over on downs. From there it was all North Wood. Although the Bremen defense stepped up and stopped the Panthers’ offense, North Wood got the ball right back when the Lions’ Chris Anderson fumbled the ensuing punt, putting the ball at the BHS 37.

Although his team improved to 2-0 ort the year with wins over NSC schools Jimtown and Bremen, Dodson knows there is plenty of improvement to be made as his team heads into NLC play this week when they host Concord. “This was not a perfect game for us, but it is a victory,” Dodson said. “There is just something missing somewhere and I haven’t been able to put my finger on it.
