Brittney clogging with her group.
Artist
The group is comprised of musicians, writers, and artists that meet every Thursday at an Episcopal Church in Bristol to discuss the struggles and inspirations that constitute an artist’s way of life. The group Was founded by die priest of that church who happens to be a writer, and is based on ideas expressed in the book, “The Artist’s Way,” by Julie Cameron. “It’s nice to have a place where you can go and people understand the process,” said Strand. “To work through die anxiety, stress, and fears creative people go through living in a left-brained world. It’s nice to do that with people; definitely very motivating and encouraging.” Strand said she entered into the group by an act of “synchronicity” in her life. “I was recycling the newspaper and it (an article on die group) just happened to be on the front page of die Elkhart newspaper with a phone number,” she said. Strand had just read about the forming of creative clusters and also about syndnontcides thiflgs falling into your path when you’re in die right place. “I think that God, the universe, fate, or whatever you call it, I think all of is have these synchronicities, but we’re just too busy to realize them,” she said. “Litde things will show up in your path to motivate you gpwg”, • • Members of this creative cluster motivated Strand to submit her work to a show in New York City, and every aspect of the show “just seemed to fall in the place,” she said. “Which tells me I’m on the right path.” The show, the 107th Annual Open Exhibition at the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park,New York City,
Postal Plea: Please keep mailboxes clear this winter
Although neither rain, nor snow, nor heat nor gloom of night stays the couriers of the U.S. Postal Service from their appointed rounds, unshoveled snow and icy sidewalks can. The Nappanee Post Office is asking customers' assistance in providing safe passage for letter carriers. Postal employees have traditionally made an extra effort to get to work during snowy and icy conditions, but are instructed to avoid deliveries to homes and businesses which could result in injury if the snow and ice are not properly treated. Carriers are already battling subzero temperatures, arctic wind chills, and deep snowdrifts. You can help by removing snow and ice from your sidewalks and steps to avoid injury to letter carriers who are attempting to deliver the mail. Also remember to clear the snow away from rural and curbside boxes, including piles of snow left by snowplows. exhibited wotks by women artists in oil, acrylic, pastel, graphics, and sculpture. The show was Strand’s third; she had previously shown her work in the Midwestern Museum of Art in Elkhart and the Colfax Center in South Bend. This New York City show, however, was by far the most exciting for her. “I’ve always dreamed, like every artist, of showing in New York,” Strand said. “1 was shocked. I never thought I could show in New York; I’m only'Dawn Strand from Nappanee. When I finally saw it hanging on the wall I was very proud, but also very relieved,” she said. “1 had never done this before. I was worrying about it getting lost in the mail.” The exhibition was open during the month of October, and commenced with a grand opening Oct. 10 that was “very posh,” according to Strand. “It’s motivating, but it’s scary,” she said. “Once you set the bar at a certain height there’s always that fear and anxiety that you’re not going to be as good in the second round. No one wants to be a one-hit wonder.” , Her students knew about her show, and were redly enthusiastic. “They’re proud of me and excited for me,” Strand said. “I hope it motivates them to work,.lt's kind of like.a coach who runs with their students, ” 3 V vr? , Strand has lived in NappaneC for the past 18 years, and has been a teacher for 10. She’s originally from Anderson, and was a graphic designer before becoming a teacher. Strand attributes her accomplishments to the positive influences in ter life. “People have come across my path at very key times,” she said. “I’ve teen very fortunate.”

Continued from front and was delighted to make the cover of a national clogging magazine, “Double Toe Times,” in April of 2002. Hochstetler met Jeff Griggs, the publisher of the magazine at a clogging workshop, and talked to him about Brittney. She later mailed a picture of Brittney to the magazine, and they featured her in an article as well as giving her the cover. -“I really think it’s really cool,” said Brittney. “1 always wanted to be famous and this was my start to being famous. And this,” she said, referring to her appearance in the Advance News. Brittney wants to be a movie star, and has already landed the lead in the first grade production of “Little Red Riding Hood” at her school. By no means limited to one or two interests, Brittney also enjoys drawing. “I want to be an artist someday,” she said. “I practice drawing a lot. I practice drawing more than clogging” Her favorite subject in school is art, and she likes to draw horses. She has a miniature horse named Dakota. The fact that she can’t really walk does not discourage Brittney in the least. While as most people might welcome pity or offer constant reminders of the trials they’ve endured, Brittney’s disability is not even an issue. Instead, this third grader looks at her situation in a positive light, regarding everything she can do. “I love being able to talk to people,” Brittney said. “I know that some kids- are shy and can’t talk to people, and I like that I can talk to people. I also like that I turned out the way I did, instead of how the doctors thought 1 would.” Dori Martin’s choice to not heed the doctors’ warnings has produced a brilliant light in the heart of Nappanee, and an inspiration to its residents.
