WAKARUSA DAY IN FLORIDA The 2004 gathering for Wakarusa Day in Florida will occur, as before, the first Tuesday in February. By Rob Nickerson Advance News Correspondent VARSITY/JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: On Friday night Jan. 9, the Black Swish jumped out to a big lead early and never looked backed. The Lady Panthers win 64-50. Laura Zeltwanger led the Panthers with 18 pts. Audrey Duncan and Mandy Yoder followed her with 15 and 14 pts respectively. Duncan pulled down 8 rebounds. Yoder dished out 6 assists and Jessica Focht had 4 steals. The win upped the Panthers record to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in theTJLC. The JV Team whipped the Warriors JV 47-17. Leading the Panthers was Brittney Hall with 12 pts, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, Krista Bontrager followed with 9 pts and 5 rebounds. Whitney Frantz and Joy Wisler each had 3 assists. Amanda Bechtel had 4 steals. The win improved their record to 84 overall and 1-2 in the NLC. Tuesday night was a huge night for the Black Swish. The visiting Panthers whipped the Mishawaka Caveman 62-38. Audrey Duncan led the Panthers with 23 pts, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Laura Zeltwanger added 11 pts and 6 assists. The win upped the Panthers record to 7-6. The Panther JV routed Mishawaka 43-13 on Tuesday, Jan. 13. Brittnay Hall had 10 pts, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Heather Stutzman and Joy Wisler each tossed in 6 pts. Stutzman, also, had 3 steals and Wisler pulled 7 rebounds. The Panthers improved to 94 for the season. FRESHMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: Saturday Jan. 10 , the Eagles of South Bend Adams defeated the Freshman Girls Basketball team. The final score was 19-11. There were no statistics reported. The Panthers fall to 5-5. On Monday Jan. 12, the Freshman Girls were at home against John Glenn. The Panthers won the ball game 35-13. They were led in scoring by Allison Maust with 10 points, dafley Tuck& and Casey Bough tdssetf in ! 6'))ts each. The Panther; upped their record to 6-5. On Jan. 13 the Northwood freshman team hit the floor with a 44-23 win over visiting Bremen. Calley Tucker led all scorers with 12 points. While Beenne Capre tossed in 10 pts. The win improved the Panthers record to 7-5. Playing their fourth game in six days, the freshman team dropped a heartbreaker to Northridge 24-23. Calley Tucker led all players in scoring with 9 pts. Bethany Ramer tossed in 6pts. The loss dropped the Panthers to 7-6. They were also in action on Jan.. 19 at home against Tippy Valley. NORTHWOOD GIRLS SWIMMING The Northwood Panthers had three first winners against host Memorial Saturday Jan. 10. The Panthers fell to the Charges 110-75. By Bob Bilinski NorthWoodAthletics.com WRESTLING On Jan. 9, Denny Lewiss matmen defeated Wawasee 42-24. Winners for the Panthers were: Derek Burnett (130 lbs), Trent Klotz (135), Dillon Whitacre (140), Jason Hochstetler (152), Chad Davis (160), Austin Mattem (171), Aaron Hahn (215), and Randy Mitschelen (HWT). Whitacre, Davis, Mitschelen, and Hahn all had pins! On Saturday the boys place third at the Goshen Super Dual with a record of 3-2. The most recent state rankings show that North Woods Austin Mattem is ranked 16th in the 171 lbs weight class and David Mishler is ranked 20th at 189. BOYS SWIMMING The boys team was defeated by Goshen 87-64 on Jan. 6. Fust place winners for the Panthers were Aaron Emerick in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Seth Emerick captured a first in the 500 freestyle. Elkhart Memorial then defeated the Panthers on Saturday 109-66. Winners of first place for the Panthers were: the 200 medley relay team of Josh Chupp, Aaron Emerick, Jason Telschow, and Kyle Hochstetler. Josh Chupp got a first in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Aaron Emerick a first in the 100 butterfly. Jason Telschow claimed a first in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay team of Aaron Emerick, James Geleske, Brent Hollar, and Josh Chupp also placed first. The boys lost to Northridge on Jan. 13 by a score of 142-39. Josh Chupp had a 2nd place finish in the 50 freestyle and Jason Telschow also had a second in the 100 breaststroke. BOYS BASKETBALL The Young Gunns defeated SB St Josephs on Jan. 6 by the score of 74-53. The Panthers used a balanced scoring attack to beat the Indians. Ryne Lightfoot led the way with 19 points. Zac Lechlitner came off the bench to add 14. Wes BeMiller had 12, Trevor Shields 10, and Derrcn Lengacher and Scott Mast added 8 points each. The Panthers are now 8-1. The boys freshman team returned to action on Jan. 10 in the Fairfield Tourney. In the first game, the Panthers defeated SB Adams 41-27. Leading the way in scoring was Brant Ehret with 11, Kent Schaffer had 9, and Nate Brown and Chad Menzie both added 7 each. In the Championship Game, North Wood defeated Fairfield 37-25. Nate Brown led with 14 points. Brant Ehret had 8 and Chad Menzie and Kent Schaffer both had 4 each. The boys are now 7-2 on the season.
