North Wood Moves to 3-0 With Victory Over Fairfield
By Mark Mikel NorthWoodAthletics.com NAPPANEE North Wood defeated Fairfield 61-49 in the Panther Pit last Saturday. “That was a good game for us,” stated North Wood coach Dan Gunn. “I thought Fairfield was very physical defensively and it’s always a good learning experience when you play a game against that. Anybody can play when you can throw the ball anywhere you want.” The Panthers took a 17-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter and continued to apply pressure throughout the first half. Ryne Lightfoot created two separate steal and coast-to-coast scoring plays in the first half. Senior Scott Mast had five rebounds just in the first quarter, sophomore Zac Lechlitner connected with two back-to-back ‘3’s opening the

Panthers defeat Westview By Mark Mikel NorthWoodAthletics.com TOPEKA Last Thursday night at Westview the Warriors led 31-30 at halftime before sophomore Ryne Lightfoot helped North Wood open a 47-33 lead entering the fourth quarter. “I think we played about as well as we can in the first half,” North Wood coach Dan Gunn said. “Our shots were not falling. Lightfoot missed some in the first half that he would normally make. Westview played well in the first half and had a lot of offensive rebounds. We talked about that at halftime and we did a better job limiting their second shots in the second half.” With aggressive defensive play from three guards - Wes BeMiller, Trevor Shields, and Zac Lechlitner -- North Wood also stepped us the pressure on defense, forcing nine Westview turnovers in the decisive third stanza. Lightfoot is off to a fantastic start this season averaging 27 points per game for North Wood. Trevor Shields, 5-11 junior, added 11 points for the Panthers. He was 3-for-3 from 3-point range, including two in the game-turning third quarter. Scott Mast, 6-6 senior, had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Panthers and 6-0 junior Wes BeMiller seven points. Mast has played well inside for the Panthers in both games so far, dominating the boards and shutting down the paint on defense.

second quarter, and junior Trevor Shields also hit a ‘3’ to help North Wood outscore Fairfield 34-22 by the half. “I thought Lechlitner played awfully well, and so did Shields,” Gunn said. “Maybe they didn’t score a lot, but defensively and passing the ball to the right man at the right time they did a nice job.” The Falcons kept it close going into the fourth quarter, but a North Wood half-court trap press frustrated Fairfield as the Panthers pulled away to victory.Lightfoot was able to make seven-of-eight freethrows in the final quarter. North Wood junior Wes BeMiller (13 points) hit 4-of-4 free-throws and a rebound basket (of his own shot) good for a six-point stretch during the middle of the fourth. Ryne led the Panthers in scoring with 22 points. Wes BeMiller added 13 and Josh Sabo 10.
