By Mark Mileel North Wood Athletics.com MISHAWAKA - The Lady Panthers fell to a strong Penn Kingsmen team on Dec. 2 by a score of 48-47. Down 34-18 with 2:59 left in the third stanza, North Wood would score 29 of the next 43 points, cutting the score to one when guard Jessica Focht hit a layup with 20 seconds remaining. After two turnovers and a missed free throw by Penn, North Wood had one more chance with 3.9 seconds that seemed more like 39 minutes. Four timeout calls preceded a final play that saw Panther guard Lauren Zeltwanger drive the length of the court. "We were going to try to get the ball in the middle

and advance the ball a little further than we did, but obviously Penn was well schooled and we took the only other option we had but didn't get a very good look," North Wood coach Steve Neff said after watching Zeltwanger get within 20 feet of the hoop before throwing up an off-balance shot that bounced off the backboard. Penn led throughout the contest, with a 9-0 scoring drive midway through the first half digging the Panthers into a hole that was difficult to recover. While the Panthers could’ve hung their heads, they turned the tables in the second half. "I give my girls credit. They played hard and made a game of it when they could’ve packed their suitcases at halftime and went home," said Neff. Audrey Duncan, Focht and Zeltwanger each netted seven points in the fourth quarter.
Panthers Win Season Opener a.. u±J By itiuiK rvUKOI North Wood Athletics.com BOURBON - The visiting Panthers, getting a career-high 31 points and a superb all-around game from Lightfoot, still had to go into overtime biMM duing stubborn Triton 73-66 in the victory for North Wood. "They're the most talented Triton team we’ve faced since I’ve been here," said Gunn. Todd Blackford had an opportunity to give Triton the lead at the 1:30 mark of regulation, but managed only one of two free throws in knotting the score at 62-62. The Panthers made a valiant effort to avoid an extra session, but Lightfbot's leaner just missed and teammate Zac Lechlitner's rebound attempt did everything but fall in. Lightfoot’s previous high was 23 points. North Wood never trailed in overtime as Lightfoot drained three straight free throws with 16 seconds elapsed after being fouled beyond the 3-point arc. He added a basket and two more charity tosses arid Wes BeMiller made all three of his free-throw chances to cement the victory. "We had a lot of good efforts," said Gunn, who watched Lightfoot get plenty of support Josh Sabo and Scott Mast both had twelve points and BeMiller chipped in with nine. North Wood led most of the game, but couldn't put Triton away. The Trojans were forced into nine turnovers in the opening period in falling behind 19-16. BeMiller had nine of the Panthers 20 assists.
