Panthers Pick Off Eagles for Sectional Victory

By Mark Mikel NorthWoodAthlettcs.com CULVER 19 the Culver Academy Eagles out rushed the North Wood Panthers 260 yard to 239 yards. Total offense again went to the Eagles (265-259). But the Eagles had more of one statistic that proved fatal to their dreams of continuing their season Garrett Gish had three of his four pass attempts intercepted by Panther defenders. Trevor Shields, a junior defensive back, had two picks himself for North Wood, both of them at crucial times during the game. Shields first interception came early in the second half right after North Wood had lost a fumble to the Eagles. Shields second interception came on the North Wood I-yard line as Culver was attempting to score with 11:01 remaining in the game. Senior Derrick Miller added the third Panther interception late in the fourth quarter. On the thca&picks our.kids were in*pa&iiioa to make thf'plhys. said Coach Rich Dodson of those turnovers. The Eagles took an early 7-0 lead after both teams had drives stall on their first possessions, and Culver put together an 88-yard, 12 play drive. After that first quarter, we had to make some changes, said North Wood head coach Rich Dodson, back on the sidelines after being at his son Trents wedding in Alaska last weekend. We mentally got into the game a little better. The biggest change was done up between the ears. The North Wood offense was led by Michael Ramirez who rushed for 100 yards on 14 carries. Darren Lengacher had 84 yards on 10 carries. Ramirez added touchdowns of 18 and 38 yards while senior quarterback Phil BeMilldr scored three times, all on one yard plunges. A key play in the second quarter came when Michael Bechtel took the snap for an apparent field goal attempt, but then flipped the ball to the kicker, Ryan Burkhart who ran for 16 yards to the 1 yard line. Culver Academy head coach Andrew Dorrel was proud of the way his team played, but gave credit to Coach Dodson and the Panthers. We moved the ball well and Im not taking anything away from North Wood coach Dodson has a great program. The win brings tfwNorthWood record to 7-3 and advances the Panthers to the second round of the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 19. The Black Crunch will next play at home on Friday against the New Prairie Cougars who are coached by North Wood alum and Nappanee native Bart Curtis. The Cougars defeated Lakeland 56-14 to earn the right to play the Panthers. New Prairies hjghtpowered offense has put up big points all season long. The game is scheduled to be played at Andrews Field in Nappanee with a 7 p.m. kickoff slgted; ' Tickets may be purchased in advance at the North Wood Athletic office.
