Lifestyle Changes for Better Health: Smoking and You
Maximum Health is the quest for being as healthy as possible. We recently talked about the importance of catching health problems early to achieve Maximum Health. Another important part of achieving Maximum Health is making good lifestyle choices for a healthy future. We all make choices every day that affect our health. One of the most important choices we make is whether or not to smoke. How many people smoke and what problems are caused by tobacco use? Most assume that fewer people smoke today - and this is true - but 25% of Americans still smoke. That means 50 million Americans still use tobacco daily. What kind of health problems do these people face? Because smokers inhale fumes from burning tobacco, smoking causes major lung damage. This can include severe irritation and destruction of lung tissue. That means that healthy lung tissue, which we need to breathe, is gradually destroyed. This causes major lung disease like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Even worse, smoking causes lung and many other cancers. Tobacco causes lower levels of oxygen that is needed throughout the body. That’s because it adds carbon monoxide to the blood that replaces needed oxygen. This deprives the body of oxygen and causes carbon monoxide poisoning throughout the body. Tobacco also contains many chemicals that cause cancer in the lungs and throughout the body. This causes many long-term health problems including higher risk for heart attack, stroke, respiratory disease and infections, lung and other cancers, and general poor health. A,big issue that has emerged in the last ten years has been the risk to

non-smokers from second-hand smoke. Everyone who shares space with smokers suffers the same health problems as the smoker from breathing slipstream or second-hand smoke. Research proves that children of smokers have much higher rates of upper respiratory infections than children of non-smokers. The same is true for adults, and has led to both voluntary and legally imposed restrictions on smoking in public places. Smoking causes a huge public health problem. Over 430,000 deaths per year in the United States are caused by tobacco use, making tobacco the number one cause of death and disease in this country. The medical care costs of smoking are over SSO billion annually. Lost earnings and lost productivity add another $47 billion per year. Of all adult smokers in America, 50% will be killed by tobacco-related disease. That is quite an incentive to quit smoking; why not make an effort to quit and improve your chances for Maximum Health? Nearly everyone knows it is best to quit smoking. The question many ask is not whether to quit, but how to quit. In the next Maximum Health Story we will explore ways to effectively quit tobacco use and move toward a healthier future. Remember - hold fast, stand firm, and persevere!
