BAT PROGRAM TO AT WOODLAWN OCT. 11 ELKHART The Organization for Bat Conservation is bringing a variety of live bats for a “Bats of the World” program at Woodlawn Nature Center, including a Vampire Bat. There will be a slide show and a chance to hear echolocation by a bat. Opportunities will be available to buy bat houses, bat books, and many other “batty” merchandise. Unlearn many myths about bats and come to understand how vital bats are to the world. Costs for this program is: members, $1 per person; and non-members, $3.50. Pre-registration is required by calling Woodlawn Nature Center at (574) 264- 0525. MAKE NATURE CRAFTS AT THE PARK— OCT. 11, 12 FALL LEAF MODGE PODGE OCT. 11 ELKHART keep some of that color all year long, come on out to Bonney ville Mill County Park and make a wonderful Modge Podge wall hanging. Military News Deavers completes basic Marine training SAN DIEGO, CALMarine Corps Pvt. Robert L. Deavers, son of Sherry M. Deavers of Nappanee and Jim L. Deavers of Elkhart, recendy completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Deavers and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a.m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Deavers spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Deavers and recruits slso received instruction on the Marine Qjrps’ core values honor, courage and commitment, and what the words mean in guiding persona) and professional conduct. Deavers and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as “Marines” for the first time in their careers. Deavers is a 2002 graduate of North Wood High School.

BUTTERFLY BROOCH OCT. 12 ELKHART Join the parks department in recreating nature’s beauty. Burdocks magically change resembling very realistic butterflies. Bird feathers are carefully painted using a sketched design, eliminating the need for a fancy artist The brooches that will be created are quite simple, yet stunningly beautiful. ANNUAL WALK FOR HOSPICE OCT. 12 ELKHART The annual Walk for Hospice to benefit The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. will be held on Oct. 12 in South Bend,

Each walker with over $35 in pledges receives a t-shirt. The following will be made available to all walkers: rest stops stocked with complimentary food and water, first aid stations, restroom facilities along the route, “poop out” vehicles for tired walkers, and a finish line celebration. You can show your support by walking as an individual or as a team of coworkers, church group members, friends, or family members. Alternatively, you can help out by volunteering before, during, or after walk, or by pledging another walker. The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. is a non-profit, communi-ty-based agency providing comfort and support to all people facing the end of life. Through its offices, Hospice of St. Joseph County, Marshall County Hospice, Hospice of Elkhart County and Hospice House, The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care serves St. Joseph, Marshall, Elkhart, LaPorte, Fulton, Starke and Kosciusko counties, and is Indiana’s most chosen Hospice.

WA-NEE Senior members of the Nappanee and Wakarusa communities are invited to participate in the REAL Services hot lunch program by calling the Union Center Church of the Brethren at 7734295 or the Town Cabin at 8624400, one day in advance, to make your reservations. Meals are served at 11:45 a.m. Menus are subject to change without notice. Due to the diets of some persons, the food is not highly seasoned. Meals are served Monday through Friday, to all eligible seniors (60y«irs of age or oldefr)' A voluntary donation of $2.50 per meal is requested (actual cost of each meal is $6). REAL Services provides approximately 950 meals per day at 45 area nutrition sites.
