She enjoys watching sporting events, spending time with family and doing activities with friends. “Wakarusa has a community that always seems amiable and welcoming. It is a delightful place to be anytime, however, when the atmosphere gets even more enjoyable there is a special event which is the Maple Syrup Festival. “People of all ages gather to take pleasure in the many activities and usually leave with a smile on their faces. If I were awarded Maple Syrup Festival Queen, it would be an honor and privilege.” CALLEY LYNE TUCKER Calley Lyne Tucker is the daughter of Conrad and Rita Tucker. She is active in volleyball, basketball, student council and the silent witness (Christian) club at school. She also plays AAU basketball, soccer, and is the president of her 4-H Club. Calley attends Nappanee Missionary Church. She is a high honor roll student and has received many awards: first in Midwest Majestic Pageant, Sunburst Pageant runner-up twice and Princess Michiana fourth runner-up when younger. She also received first place in Kiwanis Soccer, HCAC Track Champs 2002, HCAC Basketball Champs 2003, Torch of the Month
Police Reports ROARK ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED ROBBERY Nappanee Police arrested Johnny Roark Jr., 40, 1151 E. Walnut St, Nappanee, for attempted robbery. On April 5 at 6:36 p.m., the Nappanee Police Department received a call from the manager of Low Bob’s Tobacco Mart at 1104 E. Market St„ stating that she had just had a male subject ask for all the money in the drawer. After refusing to give the subject any money he purchased some items. When asked what else he needed, he again stated “give me all the money in the drawer.” The clerk informed the man that she was going to push the panic alarm if he did not leave. The subject left shortly afterward and was watched as he walked to a house behind the store. Sgt. Matt Tice along with Ptl. Bickel and Reserve Pd. Jeff Mashack arrived at the scene. The suspect was located and taken to the Nappanee Police Department. Although he stated he was joking to officer, the clerk was placed in fear from the incident. The suspect, Johnny Roark Jr., was charged with attempted robbery and taken to the Elkhart County Jail with no bond and a class D felony. MCGOWEN ARRESTED FOR DELIVERY OF METH Julie K. McGowen, 31, was arrested by Nappanee Police for delivery of methamphetamines. Officers were investigating a battery call at PJ’s Sports Bar when they recognized one of the subjects inside as having a warrant through the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. The subject, Julie McGowen, was taken into custody for delivery of methamphetamine in excess of three grams, a class A felony. Julie was taken to the Nappanee Police Department and was then picked up by ECSD. Her bond was set at $50,000. OWEN ARRESTED FOR OWI On April 6, Nappanee Police arrested Donald Ray Owen, 28, of Ligonier, for operating while intoxicated, a class A misdemeanor. At approximately 2:32 a.m.. Officer Nik Havert stopped a gray pick-up traveling eastbound on U.S. 6 for driving without working taillights. While speaking with the driver, Donald Ray Owen, Officer Havert noticed a strong smell of alcoholic beverages coming from the vehicle. Owen submitted to and failed three field sobriety tests and also refused to submit to a chemical breath test. He wks then arrested for operating while intoxicated and was written a citation for driving with a suspended license. Owen was later transported to the Elkhart County Detention Facility and there held on a $1,500 bond.

WA-NEE Senior members of the Nappanee and Wakarusa communities are invited to participate in the REAL Services hot lunch program by calling the Union Center Church of the Brethren at 773-4295 or the Town Cabin at 862-4400, one day in advance, to make your reservations. Meals are served at 11:45 a.m. The Wakarusa site also schedules bingo on the first and third Mondays, following lunch, and a representative from the Wakarusa Medical Clinic comes to take blood pressures, free, on the second Tuesday of the month, at 11:45 a.m. Menus are subject to change without notice. Due to the diets of some persons, the food is not highly seasoned. Meals are served Monday through Friday, to all eligible seniors (60 years of age or older).
