Nappanee library hosts annual gala
NAPPANEE Nappanee Public Library held their annual Volunteer Gala Saturday. Dec. 7 to honor the 70 volunteers and supporters who have helped provide library services and programs during the past year. Guests were treated to an evening of special presentations, hors d'oeuvres, and music. Since Nov. 1 of last year, library volunteers have worked a total of over 1.860 hours shelving books, preparing new materials for circulation, helping with children's programs, tutoring, putting together mailings, and assisting with many other jobs. ELKHART Recent cool temperatures have not chilled the excitement of 30 local gardeners who have completed the first phase of the Elkhart County Master Gardeners program. Jeff Burbrink. extension educator with the Purdue Extension Service in Elkhart County, coordinates the program locally. He explained that Master Gardeners is a volunteer training program. teers who worked 100 hours and over included Lucy Hollar, John Metzler, Max Gwin, Ann Evans and Marge Quakenbush. Volunteers who worked over 50 hours were Altha Bolin. Maggie Brink and Jo Anne Wilson. Maggie Brink and Jonathan Benedict tallied the most hours for the Junior Volunteer Program. John Leavitt and Tom Slater were recognized for serving as Library Trustees for 16 and 15 years respectively. Both men reached the maximum term allowed in October 2002. Library Director Linda Yoder, made a special presentation of books in honor of al of the library volunteers, literacy tutors, the Friends of the Library board, and the board of trustees.
2002 is planning to offer a number of seminars this winter and spring on gardening related subjects. They will also host a Garden Tour on July 12, set up a booth at Elkhart's Rhapsody in Green in June, and present a number of workshops at the 2003 Elkhart County 4-H Fair. In addition. Master Gardeners are available to speak to groups in the community, including schools, service clubs and church groups. The focus of their volunteer efforts is education. “This is always a very special evening for us," said Library Director Linda Yoder. “It is especially so this year as we recognize John and Tom for their many years of dedicated service and celebrate with them and all of our other volunteers the successful completion of a building program in 2001 and the many success stories we have had since then." Yoder went on to note that circulation in the past year has increased as much as 69 percent last month, computer usage is up 77 percent and there on average 400 people visiting the library each day. “That is phenomenal for a community this size and for a staff this size!" said Yoder. "Our volunteers truly are our Hometown Treasures!”
Gardeners in Elkhart County will be offered in the fall of 2003. Burbrink suggested that interested people call his office at 533-0554 to be placed on a mailing list for an application, to be mailed in May 2003. Most surrounding counties also have a Master Gardener program, coordinated by the local county extension office. Members of the 2003 Elkhart County Master Gardener class included Diane Pippenger of Milford and Kellie Stahley of Wakarusa.

Christinas books are now available at Waky Library

Playground project off to good start NAPPANEE The Nappanee Playground Project is off to a good start. Co-coordinators Rocki Stillson and Steve Gall are leading the community effort to build a new playground at Stauffer Park on June 11-16. Over $ 100.000 must be raised in order to make the dream a reality. One way many businesses, organizations and individuals are helping reach this goal is through sponsorship of playground components.
