The Halloween practice of carving Jack-O-Lantems is actually an old English custom. It was said that the eerie light cast off by these hol-lowed-out, lighted pumpkins would ward off evil spirits. The Jack-O-Lantem name was derived from “Jack with a lanthom." the nickname for an imaginary light that hovered over swamps, misleading unwary travelers. It is estimated hat over 145,000 tons of pumpkins are processed each year in this country. Baked pumpkin dishes are a sheer delight to many of you. Several new magazines have been added to the Childrens collection that may aid in doing research for projects. Ask magazine is for students in grades 2 4 with an emphasis on arts and science. Appleseed is a magazine for students in grades 2 4 with one topic each month. Cobblestone and Calliope are publications for students in grades 4 9. Cobblestone used events in American History for its topic while Calliope covers events from World History. The story changes on Monday each week to give a maximum number of children a chance to hear a tale before it changes.
