Win against Bethany closes VBall season

The North Wood High School varsity volleyball team earned a come-frora-behind victory over Bethany Christian last week, 9-21, 21-12,21-16,15-21,16-14, with the five-game victory moving the Red Slam to 13-16 on the season. Marian Sectional competition is set to begin this week. With North Wood taking on Northridge at 7 p.m. Thursday. In the game against Bethany, Chelsey Bowers led serving with 20-of-20 and one ace, while Kelsey Newcomer added 10-11-1. Bowers was also good on 18-23 spikes with eight kills and 10 digs, and Newcomer had nine assists. Jessica Focht was good on 14 assists, a solo block and 10 digs for the winners, while Audrey Duncan added 21-26 spikes with 11 big kills and a solo block, and Cariea Howard had 26-30 spikes with nine kills. Rounding out the Panther stats were Carrie Egging with 13-17 spikes and five kills, to go with a solo block and Rachelle Commons with nine digs. Frosh close out impressive season

The North Wood High School freshman volleyball squad closed out a 27-3 season last week, with a 21-15, 21-16 win over Goshen and a 21-7, 21-9 victory over Whitko. Both matches were played at Goshen. The Panthers finished 8-1 in Northern Lakes Conference competition. Against Goshen, Heather Stutsman was 15-15-6 in serving, with 23 sets and eight assists, while Amanda Kemp added 9-10-1 serves, 4-5 spikes with a kill and four passes and Cherie Avitia was 5-6-3. Joslyn Focht added 14 sets, 7-9 spikes with two kills and Erika Stouder was good on 10-12 spikes with five big kills and a solo block.

Middle School Bth-graders lose close one in tourney

The North Wood Middle School veighth “A” volleyball Panthers hosted the first round of HCAC tournament action, falling to Concord, 621, 21-16, 19-21, and closing out their season with a respectable 8-5 mark. Anna Kitson led serving with eight points, while Steph Steiner added seven, Bethany Ramer five and Calley Tucker four. Ramer also had 31 passes and seven hits, Kitson 29 passes, Casey Bough 29 passes. 19 sets and nine hits, while Steiner added eight sets and nine hits and Jaclyn Swain seven hiLs. Big scoring game for Bth grade Panthers

The North Wood Middle School eighth grade football team downed Grissom 40-16 Oct. 15 at Grissom. The 3-3 Panthers were led by lan Hinton. He rushed for 112 yards, scored a TD and passed for an additional 80 yards. Tyler Slagle rushed for 50 yards and scored once, while Brant Ehret caught four passes for 62 yards, scored once and ran two, two-point conversions. Kelly Adams added 73 rushing yards and scored twice on two-point conversions and Chad Menzie .added three pass catches.for 29 yards and scored a TD and a twopoint conversion. Rounding out the Panther scoring were Jed Beer with a touchdown and Zach Richmond who added another two-point conversion. The seventh grade Panthers fell to Gritsom. 37-7.
