Moment of Meditation... By Pastor Jim Stuitz First Baptist Church, Bremen Vacations are times to get away, to relax and enable you to do something different, maybe even adventurous. In the ocean off the of Florida I experienced my adventure. The waves were getting a little higher and I just had to try it. 1 carefully watched others as they waited patiently for just the right wave and then paddled their surf board furiously to catch the wave. Surfing those waves looked so easy. I’m sure I could do it, I said to myself. Well the board I was using wasn't a full surf board, it was one you were supposed to lay down on. But the principle was the same, catch the wave and ride it to shore. I found out it is much easier to watch

Riding the Waves
and talk about it than to actually do it. But after being pounded by several huge waves and swallowing a lot of salt water and even skinning the tops of my feet on the rocks I finally managed to catch a wave and ride it to shore. What a thrilling experience, what a joy I had when I finally was able to ride the waves. As belie'ers we are constantly faced with trials and troubles that crash over us much like a wave of the sea. We are beat upon by difficulties from all sides. What do we do as we are about to be buried under the pounding waves. I think that we need to learn how to surf. However you don’t have to go to Florida or California but only to the book of James to learn this skill. James 1:2-4 says: "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into

various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience." The waves are the various trials that keep pounding on us. But you and I can catch the wave and allow the difficulty to carry us on a joyful ride. God wants to use the hard things we face to mature us, to perfect us arid to produce endurance and steadfastness in our life. You may think this skill is impossible, you don't know how to surf on the waves of trouble and trials. The next verse helps us; James 1:5 says: "If any of you lacks Wisdom, let him ask of God". None of us actually looks forward to the waves of trials, but God wants us to get out our surf board, count it all joy. and ride the waves to the shore of spiritual maturity. Africa, here they come
By Holly Heller CNHI News Service BREMEN Ben and Amy Snyder are going to live near poisonous snakes and crocodiles. They’re going to cook from scratch, as there are no grocery stores or restaurants. They’re going to have electricity for only three hours a day, in a land where there is no television reception and there are no cars. And they can’t wait. “How awesome it is that God can use my skills as an aircraft mechanic to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Ben said. Amy added, “There is a mission hospital in the village where we will live, and I am excited about sharing the love of Christ as I minister to sick and hurting people.” The newlyweds are missionaries who have been assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Africa by Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). “The service allows missionaries to focus on their work [by saving travel time]," Ben said. The Snyders explained that traveling to the remote village where they will live in Congo takes 24 hours by four-wheel drive or two days by boat. Using small aircraft, MAF’s slogan explains their purpose: "Conquering barriers to reach people others can't.” MAF operates the world’s largest fleet of private aircraft used for the public good. MAF planes transport Christian evangelists, workers and teachers, sick and injured villagers, doctors, medicine and relief supplies, food, seed and livestock to remote areas of Africa. Asia, Latin America and Eurasia. “MAF only operates in countries where there are geographic barriers. Countries that are very isolated,” Amy said. The Snyders have already begun raising funds to support their missions trip. They need to raise a onetime fee of $ 17,500 and find enough sponsors to fund their monthly expenses of $5,075 for a period of three and a half years. So far, they’ve raised about 31 percent of the monthly goal from family and friends, as well as from members of Nappanee Missionary Church and Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton, Tenn. “We’ve just been educating people about what we’re doing, mostly

on an individual basis,” Ben said. The one-time fee of $17,500 will pay for a nine-month language school they will attend in Montreal. Canada to learn French, and will fund their moving costs. “It gets us there,” Amy explained. The monthly fee covers a salary for the couple, which is roughly equivalent to that of a first-year teacher in the United States. It also pays for medical insurance, retirement benefits, housing allowance, and trips home during furloughs. They plan to finish raising financial support by April 2003, then attend language school in Canada that fall, eventually departing for Africa in Summer 2004. They will live in a new home with hot, running water. While electricity is only available for three to five hours each day, solar panels and batteries offer alternate means of power. The temperature is in the high 80s and very humid, especially during the rainy season from September through May. Because they will live near the equator, daylight hours remain steady at 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. year-
