Final competition PHOTOS raOVIDED The North Wood High School Red Regiment closed out this season's marching competition schedule, Saturday, at regional contestin Carmel. Although the group did receive a First-Division rating at the contest, it was not among the five finalists selected to continue to state, to be held at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Three area bands competing in the Chesterton Regional on Saturday advanced: Fairfield, Concord and Elkhart Central, while at Carmel, judges granted division 1 scores to-13 of the 15 bands competing, with no local unit (including NorthWood, Northridge, Penn and Goshen) advancing. The students made crafts to go along with their poems, listened to stories that rhymed and participated in other activities. Hold class for seniors Senior citizen who have some experience with computers and is interested in teaming more can sign up for a Basic Computers II course at the Nappanee Public Library. The six-session class will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9a.m.-noon beginning Oct. 30. Learn with your peers as an Ivy Tech instructor helps you use advanced Windows features and how to organize files, print and maintain a computer. Discounts for the course are significant for qualifying seniors. To qualify for discounted enrollment, participants must be Indiana residents who are at least 60 years old, who are retired from their primary vocations, not employed full time and who hold a high school diploma or GED certificate. Market St., will host a mini-health fair, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m.-noon, with testing and flu shots provided by the Elkhart County Health Department. Variety of activities offered at senior center
All senior members of the community are invited to become active in the many programs of Nappanee’s senior center. Elder Haus, located at 252 E. Market St. The center is open Monday through Friday. The telephone number is 773-2424. All kinds of games are available, including Uno, Skip-80, Rook, Yahtzee, (3 & 13 game at Ip.m. Fridays). A jigsaw puzzle is always in the works. Come join the fun. Quilting takes place all day on Monday and Friday. You are invited to bring a sack lunch and stay all day. There is a microwave available for heating soups and sandwiches. Pinochle is enjoyed at 1 p.m. Mondays, and Euchre and other games at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Friday is “Volunteer Day,” with opportunity given for cutting stamps for recycling, and for quilting and visiting. The stamps are given to the stamp club that meets at the Nappanee Public Library. Please do not schedule appointments on Mondays or Thursdays between 1 la.m.-lp.m., since the taxi is used for trips to REAL Services meals at that time. The van is available from 9a.m.4p.m. weekdays. A mystery trip is set for Oct. 30, with the group leaving Elder Haus at 10:45a.m. This will be for lunch, as well as one stop for shopping. Reservations are a must, and should be called in soon, to make sure you have a place in the van.
