Playground Project The Nappanee Playground Project is having an informational meeting at the Nappanee Public Library, Thursday at 7p.m. Everyone interested in helping with the planning and organizing of this important community project is encouraged to attend. No School Friday is fall break for students in Wa-Nee Schools, and parents are reminded that all students will be on break, including those who attend the Elkhart Area Career Center. Also, on Thursday and Friday, October 31-November 1, school t will be in session only half-days at North Wood High School, with students dismissed at 11:15a.m. each day. Bus transportation will be provided. LIBRARY BOARD The meeting of the board of trustees of the Nappanee Public Library originally scheduled for Thursday, October 24 has. been rescheduled to Thursday. Training session
Several members of the Nappanee Smokey Stover volunteer fire department spent a part of their Sunday afternoon getting acquainted with the newest addition to the department—a platform-ladder truck measuring 95 feet in length. The unit was hooked up to a city water tower located next to the North Wood High School parking lot, and firefighters took the platform high to see just how powerful and how great a distance the spray could be. It is impressive.
Celebrate ‘Red Ribbon Week’
North Wood High School students are celebrating Red Ribbon Week. The week ’is a student-led emphasis to help their friends to be drug and alcohol free. To kick off the week. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) leaders traveled to Indianapolis to participate in a statewide Red Ribbon Rally.

We feel very fortunate to be bringing Kagan into this area, not only for the benefit of our staff, but also for members of other area schools," said NWHS Professional Development Committee (PDC) Member Beverly Fales. Deb Julian, another PDC Member, added. "Those of us who attended the Kagan Institute this summer felt that Dr. Kagan did a wonderful job of giving us the structures to put the theory into practice without having to slight the curriculum." This workshop, which will be held as part of North Wood High School's professional development program, is open to area K-12 educators; however, space is limited. Sales tax increase begins December 1 The Special Session of the Indiana General Assembly increased the sales tax to 6%, effective December 1, 2002. This increase means some advance work on the part of the computerized software industry, as well as the Indiana Department of Revenue, which administers sales tax.The department encourages all retailers to start early in making their program changes, to ensure that the proper 6 % sales tax rate will be applied on December 1. Additional information about the new law and its effect on sales tax and a retailer’s collection allowance can be obtained by accessing the department’s website at www.state.in.us/dor. House of Holly offers crafts, drawings Please put "House of Holly” on your list of holiday activities. This annual fundraiser, sponsored by the Eta Zetz Chapter of Psi lota xi, is a silent auction of handmade crafts, clothing, holiday items and much more. The event will take place Sunday, November 24, 12-5p.m., at the home of Stan and Tonya Beehler, 1352 Pickwick Court, Nappanee. A $2 donation for each House of Holly ticket also buys an entry into a drawing for a special door prize. In addition, raffle tickets for a handmade quilt are available for $1 each or 6-S5. Entrants in either drawing need not be present to win. Tickets for House of Holly and the quilt raffle are available from sorority members, or at the door. For further information about House of Holly, please call 574-773-7628. North Wood team wins conference Spell Bowl North Wood High School hosted the Northern Lakes Conference Spell Bowl. Monday, October 14, with the hosts coming in first following two tiebreakers. Panther team members with perfect scores were Lee Ann Parson, Katie Hartman and Brooke Bates, with the winners closing with 67 points, as did second-place Northridge. There were four misses in the first tie breaker, and the winner was the team with the most perfect scores. Northridge had one perfect speller. Concord finished third with 66 points, while Warsaw was fourth at 61, followed by Plymouth with 41 and Goshen at 24. Accept nominations for chamber award * Residents are reminded that Friday, November 8, is the deadline for entries in The Nappanee Chamber of Commerce-sponsored "Business Beautification Award," which is presented quarterly. Residents who have noticed a special effort to "dress up” a business, professional office, church or industry are invited to nominate the location for the award—for the third quarter the chamber is looking for existing building renovations. Submit your nomination (name, address and specific improvement), to the chamber office. A chamber-appointed committee will visit each site before determining the winner. Bulldog Bash The first Bulldog Bash was held at Nappanee Elementary School on Oct. 12. Students and their parents were treated to fun games and refreshments. Some of the games included a ring toss, an obstacle course, face painting, bean bag toss and a variety of other activities.
