Reminds drivers, passengers ‘it happens 1 ; Every 12 minutes someone in America is killed in a traffic crash and “it happens" in Elkhart County. Through participation in Click It or Ticket’s Pickup Truck Seat Belt .Campaign, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department reminds late summer travelers that driving without a seat belt poses serious risk —and a higher risk for those traveling in pickup trucks. The message to motorists is that “It Happens." What ’ Motor vehicle crashes. “Many motorists think they are safer in a pickup truck and the likelihood of a crash is less than in a passenger vehicle." says Ptl. David McGuire. “The fact is that ‘it happens' to everyone in all vehicles and the best chance for survival is buckling up all the time.” Indiana is among the nation's leaders when it comes to the number of pickup truck drivers killed on the road who weren't wearing their seat belts—a leading fact that isn't so glamorous. “For all persons killed in pickup trucks on Indiana's roadways in 1999. 77.5 percent were unrestrained, compared to 49.4 percent of unrestrained occupants killed in passenger cars, SUVs and vans combined,” said McGuire. Seat belts save lives—more than 9.500 lives a year on average: A fact you can live with. “Properly seeuririg yourself, and all passengers, improve your chance of survival by 50 percent." said McGuire. The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department will be enforcing Indiana's primary seat belt law with increased enforcement August 25-September 8. ,■ Call the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department at 574-533-8644 for information on Click It or Ticket or contact the Governor’s Council on Impaired or Dangerous Driving, a division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Instituteiit 317-232-1295. Vehicle crashes leading cause of death among children
Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. In 2000. an estimated 248.000 children ages 14 and under were injured as occupants in motor-related crashes. Child safety seats and safety belts, when installed and used correctly. can prevent injuries and save lives. Unrestrained children are
more likely to be injured, suffer severe injuries, and die in motor vehicle crashes than children who are properly restrained. For these reasons and many more, the Elkhart County Safe Kids Coalition works with local and state law enforcement, health care centers, community volunteers and area businesses to provide Child Passenger Safety information and Instruction to the residents of Elkhart County. In 2001. more than 350 child restraints were inspected and distributed to nearly 300 families in need. Parents often think they are using their child restraint correctly, but the fact is that the misuse rate nationwide is 85%, and for Elkhart County residents it is nearly 100%. Child Passenger Safety advocates and technicians are working diligently to lower these numbers and educate parents so that they may use the appropriate child seat correctly on every ride.
