Panthers drop Jimtown
NAPPANEE The North Wood High School tennis team tuned up for sectional action with a May 15 win over non-conference Jimtown, 4-1. The Panther JV also topped their visitors 4-1. In varsity action, No. 1 singles. Chelsey Bowers, topped Courtney Wallin 6-2, 6-1, while Kesley Davis fell at the No. 2 spot, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, to Melanie Brandenberg, and Corinne Shields won the No. 3 matchup, 6-0,6-1, over Holly Bragg. The No. 1 doubles team of Nicole Fishbum/Renee Jensen topped Erin Allender/Nicole Byrket, 6-1, 6ro.
Panther diamondmen struggle
Jesse Fink and Phil Sumpter each connected for two singles, while Rory Clouse and Dustin Zentz added a single each, but the NWHS varsity baseball team fell to Goshen, 6-0, in a Northern Lakes Conference contest played May 15, at Goshen. While Redskin pitcher Jason Holmes, who went the distance, held the Panthers scoreless, striking out three and walking three, the hosts were scoring in each of the first three innings, enough for the league victory. Trent Mast and Kyle Martin both saw mound duty for the Panthers, who committed four errors in the contest. Jared Markham connected (or a double for the winners, while Tyler Martin was good for two RBI. Plymouth also shutout the Panthers, 12-0, in a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule. while the No. 2 team of Laura Gillam/Kelsey Gillam defeated Heather Kelley/Kendall Hoffman, 2-6, 6-0, 62. In JV singles, Michelle Flora won 8-2, Brea Persing fell 8-6 and Deanna Bedward lost 8-3, while the doubles team of Danielle Diemer/Kristal Shearer won, as did the team of Bethany Etsinger/Natalie Rummel. Carmen Sheets won an exhibition match, as did Beth Burkey, while the doubles teams of Newcomer/Weber and Harrison/Troyer lost.
Jordan Adams took the pitching loss, issuing four walks while striking out one in his five innings of duty. Nick Coircll was the winner for the guests, striking out seven and allowing no free passes. Eric Teall smashed two homers and had three RBI in the contest, while Blake Ruff has a single and triple and also brought in three runs and Zach Scott had a double and two RBI. Elkhart Central stopped the Panthers, 10-2, in a contest played at North Wood Saturday, May 18. The Panthers jumped out front 2-1 in the first inning, but could manage no more runs, while their guests scored two in the second and fifth, three in the sixth and one in both the third and seventh, to ice the win. Central pounded out 11 hits, to six for the Panthers, with Rory Clouse connecting for a single and double and Jordan Adams and Dustin Zentz each a double. ‘Black Attack 9 advances
The North Wood High School boys' track and field team competed in the Goshen Sectional Friday, May 17, finishing third behind Elkhart Memorial and Warsaw. The Panthers lit the after-burners with Scott Hill winning the 100meter dash and Casey Yerger winning the 200-meter dash. Hill is a two-time sectional champion in the 100. NAPPANEE Although Panther senior standout Scott Hill was a double winner, Elkhart Memorial walked away with the crown in the recent Northern Lakes Conference track and field meet, held at Concord. ' Hill won the 100 in 11.24 and the 200 in 23.38, and freshman Trent Chupp also captured a blue for NW, winning the long jump with a leap of 22-3. Coach Mark BeMiller stated, “We had some real bright spots. Hill continues to dominate in the sprints and Chupp improved his personal best by eight inches.” This was the first year for Memorial to compete in the NLC meet, and combined with a 7-0 record in regular-season conference matchups, earned the Chargers’ coach, Adam Homo, NLC Coach of
Duncan shatters NLC record
NAPPANEE North Wood High School senior athletic standout Carol Duncan was in top form again, shattering the previous Northern Lakes Conference shot put record in the recent league championship track and field meet, held at Concord. Duncan highlighted the Panthers' performance at the meet, tossing the shot 46-1-3/4 to break the former record of 42-8, set by Amy Miles of Warsaw in 1994. The toss was also a record for Duncan's career, with her previous NW record 41-6. The state meet mark is 49-7. Northridge closed in first place for the meet, totaling 112 points, to slip by Plymouth at 110 in the final event of the night. Since the Pilgrims went undefeated in regular season NLC competition, they will share the league crown with the Raiders. The 400-meter relay team of Ben Lehman, Casey Yerger, Joe Sheets, Scott Hill and alternates Matt Myers and Trent Chupp also earned the trip, with a second-place finish at Goshen. The Ft Wayne Regional is one
