‘Dames at Sea’ provides ‘pure fun’ for RBT audiences
Review by Frank Ramirez I The Round Bam Theatre at Amish Acres presents "Dames At Sea, ” music by Jim Wise, tyrics and book by George Haimsoh and Robin Miller, through June 9, in repertory with “Plain and Fancy. ” Theme buffets on selected nights. For information and reservations, call 1-800-800-4942). NAPPANEE There’s a very thoughtful season on tap for the Round Bam Theatre this year at Amish Acres, but "Dames At Sea.” which recently opened on the Joseph Stein Stage, is anything but serious. This show is pure fun, and anyone expecting otherwise will be sadly—no, happily—mistaken. ’ The musical is a spoof on the movie musicals of the 1930s —young girl arrives in New York from Utah with stars in her eyes and a pair of dance shoes in her tiny suitcase, and lands a part in a major Broadway show her first day. That same first day, she meets, then loses, then recovers the good-hearted song-writing sailor of her dreams, who just happens to have a sheaf full of hits under his belt. He is. in turn, tempted by the conniving star of the show, but all emerge unscathed in time for a triple wedding on board the battleship which serves as the stage, when a WPA work crew destroys the theater out from over their heads. I’m not even going to mention the fact that when the star gets seasick, our young girl has five minutes to learn the lead role and becomes a star in her own right! Andrea DiGregorio plays Ruby, that girl with big dreams, all of which come true, with wide-eyed innocence and boundless energy. Her partner is Joe Ford, who plays Dick, the song-writing sailor, with the same idealism and verve. As you’d expect, they fall in love at first sight, then realize they’ve known each other for years, back in their shared home town of Centerville, Utah. "Dames At Sea" features some of the best tap dancing we’ve seen on the Round Bam stage since Dirk Lumbard appeared in Nappanee for "The Music Man.” While all the cast sooner or later takes their turn tipping and tapping, it’s J. Courtney Taylor and Derek Martin, as the crusty, but good-hearted hoofer. Joan, and her shrewd sailor boyfriend. Lucky, who take the prize with their extended tap solos and duets in “Choo-Choo Honeymoon." The two studied at different times under the same tap teacher in Connecticut, and it’s obvious that they, as a result, work well together. Cheryl Szucsits plays Mona Kent, the prima donna with her eye on that sailor of Ruby's dreams, as shrewd, calculating and ultimately, with a heart of gold of her own. Her vocal talents are well displayed in such solos as “Wall Street" and “that Mister Man of Mine.” Rounding out the core of the cast is Jeremy Littlejohn, who is both the harried theater director, Hennesy. and the soon-to-be-married captain of the battleship. He draws clear lines between two distinctly-dif-ferent bOffoons. using his comic talents to good effect. Brent Hunsinger and Stephanie Steidley are joined by Kristyn Yoder as an ensemble which slips in and out of a number of roles, giving the impression that the stage is filled by only nine actors. The set, designed by Executive Producer Richard Pletcher, and built with Sarah Miller and John Wright, includes an impressive gun turret on the deck of the battleship as well as an understated, but effective, theater which falls apart around the actors at the end of the first act.

PHOTO PROVIDED "Dames At Sea" continues Its run at the Amish Acres Round Barn Theatre through June 9. Pictured are cast members Derek Martin, Joe Ford, Cheryl Szucits and Andrea DiGregorio, as they sing and dance their way through this musical comedy. For information and reservations, call 1-800-800-4942. David Jenkins, music director, keeps the show moving with his ten-fingered orchestra. Costumer Patty Morgan slaps a seemingly-endless array of costumes on this company, through numerous production numbers, to good effect. The costuming highlights come in the extended “Singapore Sue” number. True to the genre’s form that last number features the extended fantasy of songwriting sailor Dick, as he describes the full-length musical he wants to present, set in a den of sin in the sinister far east Needless to say, all of this is forgotten when a totally different musical is presented on the battleship’s deck, in the second act! The show had a modest run off-Broadway in the late 19605, and was revived in the 1980 s. and still plays wherever people fail to take themselves too solemnly. It is by nature a spoof, and meant to be a bit over the top, and if it’s all good-natured fun. there’s nothing sec-ond-rate about such melodies as “It’s You,” “Raining In My Heart.” “Singapore Sue” and “Let’s Have a Simple Wedding."
