Turnovers cost Panthers NLC contest at Wawasee
Coach Dan Gunn and his varsity basketball Panthers opened the 2002 portion of their schedule Saturday night, January 5, at Wawasee, with the host Warriors slipping by with a 42-41 Northern Lakes Conference win. The Panthers held a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the teams were tied at 23-23 at halftime. Wawasee edged their visitors 10-8 in the third stanza, and North Wood won the fourth period 10-9, but it wasn’t enough for a victory. The loss dropped NW to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in conference, while Wawasee moved to 5-5 (1-1). The Panthers took a 38-37 lead at just over three minutes
Black Swish takes back seat to Wawasee’s Zolman
The North Wood High School Panther Pit was jampacked Friday night, January 4, as Coach Steve Neff and crew hosted the highly-touted Wawasee Warriors and possible “Miss Basketball” Shanna Zolman. In the end, Zolman totaled a career-high 53 points, just shy of North Wood’s 57-point total, with Wawasee taking a 75-57 Northern Lakes Conference victory. Take Fairfield crown North Wood’s freshman boys’ basketball team earned top honors in the Saturday, January 5, Fairfield Tournament, topping Fairfield and Goshen for the crown. In their toumey opener, the Panthers downed the Redskins 33-30, led by Landon Rupp with 12 points and Aaron Hahn with eight. In the title matchup with the host Falcons, Kirk Mast and Aaron Hahn each chipped in nine for the Panthers, in a close 42-41 overtime win. Andy Flickinger added seven points, while Nate Taylor and Landon Rupp each had six in a well-rounded team effort. Nate Taylor his a threepointer at the end of regulation play to send the game into overtime. He hit a layup in overtime to take the lead, with the Panthers holding on for the victory. The Panthers host John Glenn Thursday, January 10, 6:30p.m. and then head to Plymouth for a December 13 NLC game.

Two free throws at the 11-second mark cushioned the lead, and Rory Clouse nailed a long-ranger at 4.4 to close to within one point, and that turned out to be the final margin. Gunn stated, “The last time we lost to Wawasee it was because we missed too many layups (NLC holiday tournament, 55-53). Tonight it was because of too many turnovers. We had the ball with about one minute left, leading by a point and we tried to force the ball inside when we shouldn’t have. We didn’t make very

The Panthers will host Northridge, Friday, January 11, at the Pit, in another NLC contest, with JV tipoff set for 6:15p.m.
