Ten free river birch trees will be given to each person who joins the National Arbor Day Foundation during January 2002. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. “River birches will add year-round beauty to your home and neighborhood,” John Rosenow, the Foundation’s president, said. “Their cinnamon-color, exfoliating bark and informal appearance give a natural look to a garden or planted area. Offer help for timber questions]
by Jeff Burbrink Extension Educator Elkhart County Timber is an often overlooked resource on many farms. When times are tight, some people turn to timber sales as a way to raise a little cash, but for the most part, very little energy is put into actually improving forested areas to increase the strength and vitality of the stand. That’s too bad, because early every farm has some acreage devoted to timber. If you are like most people, you probably don’t know much about forestry, and therefore, probably perceive it as a relatively simple industry. In actuality, the industry is a growing, dynamic business with tastes and fancies that can change as quickly as the latest fashions in Italy. If you don’t have much experience working with timber stands or sales, it might be wise to consult with a professional consultant. There are two different classifications of consultant foresters: private (for hire) and public foresters. The public foresters include ' Indiana Department of Natural Resource Forestry consultants. While these people generally do not cost much when you seek advice, they, are often spread Ain over a. number of counties,, making,it difficult to get quick service. Private consultants, like the name implies, can be hired to help you manage your woodlands or the sale of timber. The amount you pay depends upon the type of services you request. Release dean’s list Rensselaer, IN-Dr. David B. Chattin, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Saint Joseph’s College, has announced the Dean’s List for the first semester of the 200102 academic year. Dean’s List students are full time students who are in the top 10% of the student body in academics. Luke Schafer, Nappanee, has been listed on the Dean’s List. He is a junior and a math major.

For instance, you may hire a forester to mark the poor quality trees in your woods, so that you can improve the stand, or you can ask them to cut down the weed trees for you The consultants are also well-equipped to help you with the sale of timber. They understand the markets, the current trends, who is buying and what they like to purchase. It can save you much more money

Alex will be missed
By Terri Dearth, Publisher They say a dog can
become an integral part of your family. They say the experience of having a dog is a solid character builder for kids. They learn to care for something, to feed it and love it. Believing whoever “they” are, we bought a cocker spaniel puppy 13 years ago for our children, then 11,9 and 3 years old. And they were so excited. But as children tend to do, they grew up and the care of Alex fell more and more to my husband. There was band and sports, then college and marriage and soon the only people concerned about the dog were the two who purchased him. Alex loved people. Nothing thrilled him more than when the kids brought friends home fof.au overnight stay. Wifli the girls he endured many bows tied on his ears as he became the “ baby” for them to feed and bathe. For Ross and his buddies, he was the trustworthy fan there for every game that they watched. Snatching a stray potato chip now and then was just an extra bonus. My husband, a horticulturist, even endured seeing the latest thing he’d planted at times dug up or trampled because dogs will be dogs. The children had noticed a definite change in Alex over the last year. There were times when he no longer greeted them at the door. He wasn’t as quick to come when called. We all chalked it up to age. After all, he was fast approaching ninety-one in dog years. I arrived home for the holidays on Dec. 20. Alex didn’t greet me at the door and when he finally got around to saying hi I was surprised to see

how slow he moved. We went through the next several days with so many
events planned that Alex was happy to be left alone. On New Year’s Eve we were staying home. Ross was having some friends in and that was fine with us. Better our house has always been my philosophy. Alex had been sleeping most of the day and when it was dinner time Ross placed his food in his bowl. And he didn’t come when called. He didn't seem interested in eating. My husband tried to coax him with some of his favorites, but he wanted noth* ing to do with any of it. He gave the impression th<jj[he wanted to be totally alonsfc And that’s when I remembered how our cat behaved rigljr before Mldied. He went into ttjdoset anip never came out -again. appeared to me that Alex wag?, feeling the same way. So we herded the boys out c£ the kitchen, placed a blanket under the table for him to laj‘ on and left the room dark. Rosg couldn’t bear to leave hiro alone. He insisted on staying. jJu Thirty minutes later Ross cam£ upstairs with tears running down his face. Alex, with hs< head resting on Ross’ lap, took his last breath and went on to wherever dogs go when they ; leave us. We-called our daughters who came over to say goodbye to their friend as well. As V watched our three children help to place Alex in a box and listened to them recount stories about him, I was convinced, that “ they” were right. r . Alex had been an integral ( part of our family. One we will, miss.
