JOE SPRINGER December 22, 2001 Word has been received of the death of Joseph Vincent Springer, 72, formerly of the Nappanee and Goshen areas, in Mesa, Arizona, of complications following a recent surgery. He was born in Indianapolis, the son of Frank and Gladys (McCain) Springer, and married Patricia Christiansen. After her death, he married Glenda Paloncy. Springer graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and attended Canterbury College in Danville. He served two years in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he played football for the New York Giants briefly. He graduated from Hanover College, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He earned a master’s degree from Western Michigan Collage in ralamazoo, Michigan In Indiana, Springer poached football, track and ilwrestling, and taught high ichool in Nappanee, Ft. iJWayne, Rochester, jlonnersville and Goshen. He Jvas an athletic sales representative in a five-state area. Springer, Martinsville. He was preceded in death by a son, two brothers and two sisters. A memorial service will be held at 10a.m., Saturday, January 12, at Meldrum Mortuary in Mesa, Arizona. Memorials may be directed to the Goshen High School Athletic Department or to Hanover College. BETTY L. MAST Nov. 2, 1934-Dec. 27, 2001 Betty L. Mast, 67, 607 E. Lincoln St., Nappanee, died Thursday, ''December 27 at Elkhart General Hospital Emergency Room due to long illness. Bom November 2, 1934 in Marshall County, she was the daughter of Oliver and Lois (Seitz) Heckaman. She married Chester Mast September 2, 1954 in Nappanee. She was a graduate of Argos High School and a homemaker. She also worked at Coppes Kitchens in Nappanee and Corl Glass in Bremen. Mrs. Mast was affiliated with Nappanee Church of the Brethren, Nappanee VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries and Whiskerville Truckers. Surviving are: her husband, Chester Mast; a daughter, Patty Britt, Nappanee; a son, Chester Allen (Linda K.) Mast, Bremen; a granddaughter, Vashti Britt; step grandson, Robert Thurston; foster grandson, Christ Voth; mother, Lois Heckaman, Argos; a brother, Don Swoveland, Warsaw and two sisters: Mrs. Cal (Margaret) Mikesell, Rochester and Mrs. Merl (Dorothy) Overmyer, Argos. A funeral service, conducted by Reverend Paul Stauffer, was held Monday, December 31 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home in Nappanee. Burial took place at Union Center Cemetery. WINTER BREAK—kids in grades K-5 spent a day of their Christmas vacation at the Nappanee Public Library, Thursday, December 27, for the annual “Winter Break Get-Away." The morning was filled with ■fun, as children created their own puppet stages, as well as several different kinds of puppets, using colorful papers, trims, socks and other craft materials. In the afternoon, participants wrote and performed puppet shows with their one-of-a-kind puppets and miniature stages. (Photos provided)
