Panthers close, but no win in NLC tournament
Wawasee barely held on to a slim lead to take the NWHS boys’ varsity basketball team by. two, 55-53, in their holiday tournament opener last week at the Warrior gymnasium. North Wood had held a 1514 lead at the first-quarter stop and Wawasee was out front 2825 at halftime. A 15-15 third quarter score saw the teams enter the final stanza neck and neck, and although the Panthers won the final stanza, 13-12, the hosts were able to sneak through for the victory. The Panthers had three players in double figures, with Ryan Bradley nailing 15 and Rory Clouse and Robbie Lightfoot each 11. Adam Leeper and Mike Klotz each scored six and Brandon Hall four to round out the offensive effort. Clouse, Leeper and Klotz each grabbed five rebounds for the Panthers. Conrad led the Warriors with 12 points, while Knisely had 11 and Custer and Lantz each 10.

From three-point land, Lightfoot nailed 3-4 and Clouse 2-4. Coach Dan Gunn stated, “We came from 1- down (in the fourth) and did a great job of staying in the game. We just have to finish. Wawasee did a nice job. They’ve improved so much and that shows Coach Mishler is doing a great job with them. Custer is a nice player and we didn't handle him very well. We didn't do a very good job on their threepoint shooters, either.” Dropping to the consolation round of the tournament, the Panthers followed with a disappointing 56-53 loss to Northridge, at Concord on Friday night, December 21. The NLC rivals were tied at the end of three quarters. 4141, after the Raiders had outscored Coach Dan Gunn’s crew 20-13 in the third, to erase a seven-point halftime NW lead. Northridge built up a fourth-quarter lead, only to have the Panthers storm back

to force a close game. “This has been a rough stretch," reported Gunn. “But we have done a pretty good job of making our own problems with way too many turnovers. We are not shooting very well, either. The shooters are getting bumped and we are not handling that well. You need to take that and still be aj}je to score. One of our downfalls was a slow start in the third quarter —we have done that in every game we have lost.” Three Panthers were in double figures, with Rory Clouse and Robbie Lightfoot each scoring 14 and Ryan Bradley 12, while Brandon Hall and Mike Klotz each added six. Matt Crawford fired in a game-high 19 for the Raiders, with teammate Eric Eaton adding 14. North Wood heads to Wawasee Saturday, January 5, for a conference battle with the Warriors. JV tipoff is set for 6:15p.m.
