Wrestlers win Penn Dual, plan spaghetti supper

The North Wood High School wrestling team took top honors in last week’s Penn Super Dual, scoring a total of 224 points and crowning two champions. The Panthers were followed by Griffith at 219. Jimtown 172, Penn 156, PortageCentral 103 and Delta at 97. The NW dual results were as follows: first round, Griffith 44, North Wood 33; second round. North Wood 35-33 over Jimtown; third round, North Wood 61-15 over Portage Central; fourth round. North Wood 37-30 over Penn and fifth round. North Wood 63-11 over Delta.

Wawasee stomps Panthers

The North Wood High School girls’ varsity basketball team tuned up for the Northern Lakes Conference holiday tournament with a 43-34 conference win over Plymouth on December 14. Plymouth led the 8-1 (2-0 NLC) Panthers at the first stop, 11-10, but a 10-6 second-quar-ter edge put NW out front 2017 at halftime. The Swish outscored Plymouth 16-6 in the third quarter, and lagged 711 in the fourth, but had enough for the nine-point margin of victory. Carol Duncan led the offense with 16 points, and grabbed eight rebounds, while Kelsey Newcomer was also in double figures with 10 points. Nikki Frantz added seven points, Katie Chamberlin grabbed four rebounds and scored four points, while Carlea Howard also added four points and three rebounds. Stacey Wendel and Lindsay Havin were high for 4-4 (0-2) Plymouth with 12 and 11 points respectively. Plymouth slipped by in the JV contest, 19-13. Lizzie Burns led the young 6-3

Panthers with four points. North Wood followed with a 64-30 loss to high-flying Wawasee on the Warrior court, December 18, in the opening round of the NLC holiday tournament. Wawasee jumped out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back, leading 2811 at halftime, 47-17 after three and easily coasting to victory, led by Shanna Zolman who dumped in 36 points for the Warriors. Duncan scored 15 for North Wood, while hauling down six rebounds, with Newcomer adding seven. The loss dropped the Panthers to the consolation round of the conference tournament, with NW squaring off against Northridge on Thursday, December 20, at North Side Gym in Elkhart. The Panthers had no trouble with the Raiders, taking a 3822 victory led by Carol Duncan with 15 points. Nikki Frantz added eight points and Newcomer six for the winners.
