NPD conducts checkpoints
The Nappanee Police Department hosted two seatbelt checkpoints during “Blitz 24” of Operation Pullover. September 7-8, members of the NPD held a one-hour seatbelt checkpoint along US 6. The checkpoints lasted one hour, focusing on westbound traffic. The first one was held in the 400 block of E. Market St., with officers observing 641 cars. A sign warned motorists about the oncoming checkpoint — reading “SEATBELT CHECKPOINT AHEAD.” Officers observed as motorists compiled once they saw the sign. It was estimated that approximately 100 of the motorists put cm their seatbelts when they saw the sign. Once they entered the checkpoint, 23 were cited for not complying with Indiana’s seatbelt statute. On day two, during the hours of 4-sp.m„ another 629 cars were westbound through the checkpoint, held in the 800 block of W. Market St. Of those cars, about 25 were seen buckling up. Another 17 were cited for not complying with the seatbelt laws. The NPD feels that the increased enforcement efforts were positive, in that an increase in seatbelt compliance was preva-

The department also participated in a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, September 8, on US33 in Dunlap, with dfficers from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and Elkhart City Police Department. In all, about 25 officers participated in the campaign that netted four drunk driving arrests. Other arrests during the checkpoint included two warrant arrests, four marijuana and one felony handgun arrest, one child restraint and one seatbelt violation, one driving while suspended and one possession of paraphernalia arrest and two other licensing-related arrests. Nappanee has been part of the Governor’s Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving, Operation Pullover program since 1996, and plays an active role in selective enforcement for the program.
