Years Ago... Opens first-class lunch room
120 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 2, 1880 John Bailey has opened a firstclass lunch room one door south of Binkley’s drug store, where everybody can get a good square lunch at noon. The new tin shop of Will Brown and Will Miller is another feature in the way of improvement in our town. These gentlemen are young, lively and energetic. The tusk of a Mastodon is said to have been discovered in a sand bank 1 mile south of Goshen. It is about 8 feet long and a portion of it is in a good state of preservation. 100 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 5, 1900 A pathetic drama was enacted at the Lake Shore station this morning, when James Diley intercepted his runaway wife and vainly endeavored to induce her to return

When he returned home he found the trunks gone and found his cherished wife had been duped by a charming feather renovator from Syracuse. The Union Canning Company Saturday had receipts of about 500 bushels which afforded 80 to 90 peelers several hours work that day. The peelers are all women and girls and they must do this in addition to their home duties. 75 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 3, 1925 Miss Doris Roose and Willard Naylor, two well known young people were united in marriage by Rev. Hawk at Goshen on Friday, August 28. Mrs. Naylor is a member of the graduating class of 1923 and a very popular and attractive young lady, and was previously
employed by the Nappanee Telephone Co. Mr. Naylor is a trained accountant and a well liked young man. Their many friends wish them unbounded happiness. A big benefit will be tendered by Nappanee Post of American Legion on Wed. afternoon, September 9, as a testimonial to the boys who went across the seas during the great World War. Major George B. Norton will be orator of the day. 50 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 7, 1950 Twenty-three ribbons were awarded to Floyd Gordon of northwest of Nappanee on poultry displays at the County Fair which is more than any farmer living in this vicinity. Several exhibitors from this vicinity were prize winners at the Indiana State Fair, now in progress at Indianapolis. Elaine Neff of Route 3 won in 4th division with 2 cans and varieties of fruit; Diane Smeltzer, Route 1, won in 2nd division with 1 vegetables; Patty Mishler, Rte 1, New Paris won with a white loaf cake in sth division.
