Letters To The Editor
Advice needed For anyone doesn’t know my Roger, he is the guy that always stops to help a stranger when their car won’t start. He doesn’t have a nickel in his pocket, but says, “You can repay me by helping someone else.” He has a huge heart for others, and has never known a stranger. At 51 years of age, he can no longer work because severe Rheumatoid Arthritis has left him with very little use of his hands and nearly unable to stand. Roger has many friends, and now he is the one that needs a helping hand. A phone call or card would mean so much to him now. Because so many people have been asking about Roger, I will try to update things from several months ago. About six weeks ago, we found out Roger also has Diabetes. With that and the Rheumatoid Arthritis, he was told that Vocational Rehabilitation cannot retrain him for nay kind of work. Since that decision, Medicaid said he was accepted and would have his card within 10 days. Five weeks later, we still don’t have it. We are still on Cobra insurance as far as we know, though they are switching companies and the premium went up by more than half. Roger has had short spells of confusion recently, but late last week it was obvious he needed help. Dr. Wally told me to take him to Goshen E.R. and have them ran tests to find out what was happening. After four hours of testing, nothing unusual was found. His newest prescription was the most likely problem, and he was taken off that medication and sent home. The next morning the situation was much worse, and Dr. Wally said take him back to be admitted for a day or two of tests and observation. Even with hours of tests, they could not find anything conclusive. The new drug was long out of his system by then. My part-time job is all I can handle physically, by my own application for Medicaid is on hold because my Neurosurgeon retired and they can’t find proof that he told me to quit work and file for disability in 1992. Because of this, the Medicaid office has had to switch me to another department, to find me full-time work. (I had surgery for a ruptured disc and compressed nerve in 1991, and now have two more ruptured discs.) We have never asked for help from our government before, and never wanted be in the position that we have no choice. If anyone has had similar experiences and know what we might do next, we would sure appreciate hearing from you. Since Roger has been off work more than nine months and can’t return to work, we don’t know what other alternatives we have. Please call or send a note if you have been through a similar situation and can give us any advice. When God closes a door, we are to look for a window. Maybe you are that window for us. Thank you so much. Annetta (Cain Hill) (Roger A. Hill) 773-7000

Immunization clinics offered without waiting long
The immunization (“shot”) clinics offered by Elkhart County Health Department (ECHD) have undergone major changes. Parents no longer wait two-three hours to get a child vaccinated according to Sarah Burkholder, Manager of the Community Health Nursing Division (CHN). As of June 1, parents must make an appointment for shots. All the clinics are “appointment only” shot clinics now. The health department no longer provides wik-in shot clinics. Sylvia Merasco, RN Immunization Team Supervisor, suggests calling between 8:30a.m. and 3:30p.m. to make an appointment. The number to call is 219-523-2123 or 219-523-2127. Parents need to give their child’s date of birth when making appointments. If you ask someone else to make appointments for your children, please give them names, dates of birth, and days and times that would work best for you. Prior to June 1, either parents waited several hours with an apprehensive and often hungry child, or the nurses waited for children to vaccinate. Now parents seldom have to wait more then twenty minutes, and the nurses have a steady flow of children. The nurses find they are more relaxed and can actually see more children than when they operated the walk-in shot clinics. Walk-in clinics were either feast or famine according to Burkholder and very difficult to staff appropriately. Parents and children both like not having to wait according to the immunization nurses. The shot clinics are offered at 10 sites through the county. Each month at least one clinic is held in each of the following towns: Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, Nappanee, Millersburg, Wakarusa, and Bristol. Every other month a clinic is held at Miller’s Store on C.R. 34. there will no longer be a clinic at Fork’s County Line Store.

During the summer months, clinics six of the sites will offer late afternoon and early evening hours. In many families both parents work, and clinic hours from 10a.m. to 2p.m. made it very difficult for these parents to bring their children for shots. The change in hours will hopefully make it easier for these parents. In addition to the change in clinic hours, there is now a form, which a parent can fill out giving permission for other adults —such as grandparents, aunts, babysitters etc. —to bring a child for their shots. This form only needs to be filled out once and is kept with the child’s shot record. In the past year, CHN Division has doubled the number of children and the number of shots they have given. Last year 8,570 children received shots through CHN and 18,004 shots were give. This has taken additional nurses, supplies, and clinics. While the vaccines are provided by the federal or state government at no cost to the health department, the county must pay for all other expenses associated with the clinics. In April the County Commissioners approved a $5.00 per vaccine administration fee. This fee was implemented to help cover the cost of having satellite clinics throughout the county and to cover the cost of additional nurses and supplies. Both the state and federal government has criteria for who can get the free vaccines. With the $5.00 per vaccine fee the clinics can now offer all children free vaccines irregardless of age, ethnicity, and insurance status by purchasing vaccines for the children who do not meet the federal and state criteria. The $5.00/vaccine administration fee will cover the cost of the purchased vaccines. Merasco is quick to point out that no one will be denied vaccines because of inability to pay the administration fee. The health department wants every child in Elkhart County to be immunized

and they don’t want money to stand in the way. A new law enacted! last year requires kindergartners to have 3 doses of Hepatitis B, 5 doses of DTaP, 4 doses of Polio, and 2 doses of Measles vaccine. This was the first time that Hepatitis B was required. The three doses of Hepatitis B must be “given over a four to six month period. Already parents who have kindergarten age children who are not vaccinated against Hepatitis B, can only get two doses before the start of school. Additional clinics have been added during the months of July and August to help meet the need of these children to get their shots. According to Burkholder clinics are filling up fast and parents need to make appointments for their children’s shots now.
