Crime Stoppers This week’s crime of the week comes from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. On January 23, 1999 at 7:06p.m., a white male entered the Tobacco Mart located at 51530 S.R. 19 in Elkhart. He began immediately spraying the two female clerks with pepper spray. A struggle ensued and the suspect pulled a large hunting knife and stabbed both employees several times. Karla M. Doty was killed during this vicious attack, and her coworker sustained serious injuries. The suspect was in his late teens, or early 20s about 5-foot 6-inches or slightly taller. He had a thin to medium build and wore a greenish gray hooded winter coat with the hood pulled up over his mouth and nose. He was last seen west bound on Lakewood Drive. If known who killed Carla Doty and Crime Stoppers is called, a reward of up to SI,OOO could be received upon the arrest or indictment of the suspect involved.
